1. Dean Weidemann Accepts Position in Connecticut

Bumpers College Dean Greg Weidemann announced April 9 that he has accepted a position as dean and director of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Connecticut, effective June 30. He will assume administrative leadership for teaching, research and extension programs in a unified organizational structure.
Weideman joined the UA department of plant pathology in 1983. He was named associate director of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station and associate dean of Bumpers College in 1995 and was appointed dean and Division of Agriculture associate vice president for research in January 2002. When a separate position was created for associate vice president for research in August 2007, Weidemann's appointment was changed to dean of Bumpers College and associate vice president for academic programs of the Division of Agriculture.

2. Honors Day Banquet - Thursday
The Bumpers College Honors Day Banquet is set for Thursday, April 17, starting at 6 p.m., in the Arkansas Union's Alltel Ballroom. Dean Greg Weidemann, Associate Dean Donna Graham and a representative of the Bumpers College Alumni Society will present faculty and student awards recognizing academic achievement.

3. Wardlow Named AEED Department Head

Dean Greg Weidemann recently announced the appointment of Professor George W. Wardlow was appointed head of the department of agricultural and extension education. He had served as interim department head since the retirement of Donald Herring in July 2007.
Wardlow received a B.S. degree in 1977 from the University of Missouri-Columbia and spent five years as a public school agricultural science teacher. He received his master of education degree from Missouri and a doctorate in agricultural education from Ohio State University in 1984. He was a faculty member at the University of Minnesota for eight years before coming to the University of Arkansas in 1992.
Wardlow has been coordinator of the department's graduate student program since joining the faculty. He has taught courses in agricultural and extension education, research methods and data analysis, vocational education and college teaching. He has received several awards, including the Jack G. Justus Award for Teaching Excellence in 2003, the John W. White Outstanding Teaching Award in 2000, and the Outstanding Research Paper award from the National Agricultural Education Research Meeting in 1984 and 1997.

4. UA Places First in National Poultry Judging Contest

The University of Arkansas Poultry Judging Team took first place overall during at the 61st Annual U.S. Poultry and Egg Association's national poultry judging contest April 3-5, at Louisiana State University.
In addition to winning first place for the overall team, the Arkansas team took home first place for breed selection and tied for first place in team market products. Fourteen teams competed.
Members of the UA team were Sherita Baker and Samantha Blair, both of Springdale; Christopher Scarborough of Allene; and Nicole Young of Alma. All four students are poultry science majors. Young had the second highest individual score for the contest, Blair had the third highest individual score and Baker had the fifth highest individual score. Team members took home several other individual honors in the two categories.
Coach for the UA team was Jason Emmert, associate professor of poultry science. Assistant coach was Dennis Mason, visiting instructor of agricultural and extension education.
"It was an extremely tough competition, and these students really worked hard and prepared themselves for the event," Emmert said.
Other teams in the contest were from Auburn University, Kansas State University, Louisiana State University, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Penn State University, The Ohio State University, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M University, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Virginia Tech and West Virginia University.

5. Rom Receives Fulbright Fellowship
Horticulture Professor Curt Rom has received a Senior Fulbright Fellowship to teach and study at the Agripolis of Padua University, Italy, fall semester. His is one of only nine senior fellowships in all disciplines for Italy in 2008. Rom will be teaching a course in sustainable and organic agriculture and community food systems. He will conduct research on nutrient cycling in sustainable systems with emphasis on high-tunnel, off-season production.

6. Economist to Lecture on Bio-Energy - April 24
Dr. Chad Hart, an economist from Iowa State University, will present a lecture at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in Plant Science 009 that will examine the impact bio-energy has on agriculture and the economy as a whole and how bio-energy is changing the American economy. Its impacts, including fluctuating commodity, gas, and food prices, will affect nearly everyone in the U.S. An informal reception will follow the presentation.
