2. Entomology Sudents Compete at National Meeting

Title page of Systema Naturae, 10th edition, 1758.   Carlos Linnaeus, 1707-1778, also known after his ennoblement as Carl von Linné.

The Department of Entomology Linnaean team and a student debate team will compete at the Entomological Society of America meeting in San Diego, Dec. 9-12.

The Linnaean Team will compete for the national championship after having won the southeastern branch championship last March. The topic for the student debate is of biosecurity and research freedom.

Linnaean team members are Jackie McKern, Sandra Sleezer, Becky Trout, Godshen Pallipparambil, Cesar Solorzano (alternate) and coach Allen Szalanski.

Debate team members are Tara Wood, Robin Verble, Dagne Duguma, Cesar Solorzano and Godshen Pallipparambil.

The Linnaean competition is in a "college bowl" format and is named for Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus who established the binomial system of biological nomenclature. The greatest innovation of Linnaeus, and still the most important aspect of this system, is the combination of a genus name and a single specific epithet to uniquely identify each species of organism. For example, the human species is uniquely identified by the binomial Homo sapiens. No other species of organism can have this binomial. Prior to Linnaean taxonomy, animals were classified according to their mode of movement. The system was used in "Systema Naturae," first published by Linnaeus in 1735, with many later editions.
