1. Block and Bridle Sponsors Ag Olympics -- Enter by Feb. 5
Students and faculty are invited to enter the Ag Olympics to be held Feb. 8 at the Pauline Whitaker Arena, sponsored by the University of Arkansas Block and Bridle Club. Possible events include horseshoes, hay bale stacking, seed-spitting, relays such as wheelbarrow races, tug-of-war, a chili cook-off and more.
You will be able to compete on teams of five to prove you are the top Ag Olympians in Bumpers College. Individual prizes will be awarded in each event, and the team that racks up the most points by the end of the night will go down in history by having their names engraved on a traveling trophy.
Register your team by e-mailing a list of names to bandb@uark.edu by Feb. 5. If you do not have a team but still want to compete, register anyway and we'll find a spot for you. Please indicate whether your team is interested in competing in the chili cook-off as Block and Bridle plans on providing the meat for this event.

2. GSD Student Research Competition -- Enter by Feb. 4
Gamma Sigma Delta will sponsor its 10th annual competition of students' posters and oral presentations on Monday, Feb. 25, at the Arkansas Union. Enter by sending abstracts no later than Feb. 4 to Randy Luttrell at luttrell@uark.edu. See guidelines at http://gsd.uark.edu/newsletter.html#student.
Undergraduates, master's candidates and doctoral candidates will compete in their respective categories. Presentations should be based on students' own research. First, second and third places will be awarded with students receiving respective awards of $100, $75 and $50 in each category for posters or oral presentations.

3. Shelton Wins Cotton Paper Competition
Craig M. Shelton, Entomology, received $400 for his first place presentation in the Stacy Hall Memorial Masters competition at the 2008 Beltwide Cotton Conferences in Nashville Jan. 8-11. His paper was "Efficacy of Seed Treatments for Control of Thrips and Nematodes in Arkansas Cotton."

4. College and Departmental Scholarship Applications Due Feb. 15
Students planning to pursue majors in Bumpers College during the 2008-2009 academic year are encouraged to apply for college and departmental scholarships by completing the Bumpers Scholarship Application located online at http://bumperscollege.uark.edu/39.htm by February 15, 2008. Paper copies of this application are also available outside the Dean's office. Contact Laura Gamble, Scholarship Administrator, at 479-575-2253 or lgamble@uark.edu with scholarship questions.

5. Application Date Extended for $5,000 Spitze Legislative Internship Award
Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors interested in public policy and hoping to participate in a Bumpers College Internship in a legislative or congressional office are encouraged to apply for the one of two $5000 Spitze Public Policy Legislative Internship Awards by February 4, 2008. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must have completed at least one course in political science, law, or public policy. The Bumpers College will work with applicants to secure an internship in a legislative or congressional office (usually for the summer). This application is available at http://bumperscollege.uark.edu/39.htm under the Separate Applications section. Did you know that as a potential or current University of Arkansas student you may be eligible for scholarships through the University and other affiliated agencies? Be sure to review the Separate Applications at http://bumperscollege.uark.edu/39.htm and the Office of Academic Scholarships Website at http://scholarships.uark.edu/index.php/home/default for more information. These scholarships require separate applications, and the Bumpers Scholarship Application does NOT make you eligible for these awards. Deadlines range from February 1, 2008, through April 15, 2008. Many of these awards have little competition because students overlook their availability, so it is to your advantage to apply.

8. Summer Camp Needs Counselors
Camp War Eagle, a summer sports and adventure camp for underserved and at risk kids ages 7-17 is recruiting college students to serve as volunteer and paid counselors.
