Notable

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness

Terry Griffin, Craig Dobbins and Jess Lowenberg-DeBoer presented a case study of on-farm experiments and farm management decision making at the American Agricultural Economics Association annual meeting July-29-Aug. 1 in Portland.

Biological and Agricultural Engineering

Yanbin Li hosted visitors this summer who are collaborating on several research projects. Maohua Wang is a professor in the China Agricultural University and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has hosted visits to China by Li and other UA faculty members. Ning Wang is an assistant professor of biosystems and agricultural engineering at Oklahoma State University. Yinggang Ou is a professor of engineering at South China Agricultural University. Liancheng Chen (Dr. Ou's wife) is a professor in information engineering at the same university.

Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences

A poster by CSES students won first place in the undergraduate poster contest at the American Society of Agronomy national meetings in New Orleans Nov. 10-13. The poster was titled"Reducing Sediment Loads through Erosion Control in Northwest Arkansas."

Food Science

Justin Morris served as an invited judge for the 2007 Arkansas State Wine Competition in October in Little Rock.

Luke Howard gave a seminar, "Processing Effects on Berry Polyphenolics," at the Second International Symposium on Health Effects of Fruits and Vegetables October 9-13 in Houston.

Plant Pathology

Scott Monfort and John Rupe attended the National Soybean Rust Planning Forum in Nashville Oct. 16.

At the annual Southern Pest Detection Network meeting in Blacksburg, Va., Rick Cartwright served as the SPDN/ National Plant Detection Network Representative for Arkansas. 

Poultry Science

Keith Bramwell recently served as judge at numerous poultry exhibits at county fairs throughout Arkansas and Missouri and gave the following invited presentations:

  • “Farm Effect on Hatchability” at the USPE Hatchery Breeder Clinic, July 11 in Atlanta, Ga.

  • “Development and Use of the Sperm Penetration Assay” in the Semen and Fertility Evaluation in Poultry Scientific Symposia held at the PSA annual meeting July 12 in San Antonio, Texas.

  • “Alternative Feeding Programs for Pullets and Breeders” at the Arkansas Nutrition Conference Sept. 13 in Rogers.

  • “Egg Handling and the Effects on Hatchability” at the Georgia Poultry Conference Sept. 25 in Athens, Ga.

Dan Donoghue gave a presentation, "Litter Treatment with Aluminum Sulfate (Alum) Produced a Modest Reduction in Cecal Campylobacter Colonization in Chickens," at the 14th International Workshop on Campylobacter, Helicobacter and Related Organism (CHRO2007) meeting in September in Rotterdam, Holland.

Gisela Erf gave a presentation and served as a poster presentation judge at the annual meeting of the Pan-American Society for Pigment Cell Research Sept. 13-16 in Chicago. Erf also gave an invited presentation at an informational meeting for vitiligo patients Sept. 16 in Chicago on the Smyth line chicken model for spontaneous autoimmune vitiligo. The event was sponsored by the National Vitiligo Foundation.

Steven Ricke gave the following invited presentations:

  • "Rapid Non-invasive Methods for Evaluation of Amino Acid Availability in Poultry Diets" and "Alternative Molt Diets for Control of Salmonella enteritidis Infection in Laying Hens" at the 2007 Pennsylvania Poultry Sales and Service Conference Sept. 18-19 in Lancaster, Pa.

  • "Development of Whole Cell Biosensors for Assessing Lysine Availability in Foods and Feeds" Sept. 21 at the Pennsylvania State University poultry science department in University Park, Pa.

Susan Watkins gave a presentation Oct. 4 at the Poultry Service Industry Workshop in Banff, Alberta. She also spoke at the North Carolina Hatchery and Breeder clinic in October and the Manitoba Turkey Producers meeting in November.
