Bumpers  College Sweeps NASULGC Southern Region Teaching Awards

Two Bumpers College Faculty members received teaching excellence awards presented Nov. 15 at the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges awards program in San Diego.

Jason Emmert

Donald Johnson

Jason E. Emmett, associate professor of poultry science, and Donald M. Johnson, professor of agricultural and extension education, received the two Southern Region awards in the Food and Agricultural Sciences Excellence in College and University Teaching national awards program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This was the first time in the 13-year history of the program that faculty members from the same university received both awards for a region. Two national awards are presented annually along with two for each of four regions of the country.

Dr. Emmert teaches courses on poultry production and careers and coaches the UA Poultry Judging Team. He involves undergraduate students in his poultry nutrition research program and serves as a faculty mentor to students who conduct undergraduate research projects.

Dr. Emmert is undergraduate curriculum coordinator for the poultry science department. He is co-leader on two USDA grant-funded projects to develop technology-enhanced poultry science teaching modules.

Dr. Johnson teaches undergraduate courses in agricultural systems management and graduate courses in agricultural education. He uses many “gadgets” in courses based on his belief that students learn best by interacting with course content.

Dr. Johnson is founding co-director of the Bumpers College Teaching Resources Center. His many scholarly publications include co-authoring two agricultural technology textbooks.
