William A. Sistrunk, 1919-2007
William Allen Sistrunk of College Station, Texas, former UA professor of Food Science, died Thursday, May 3.
A veteran of World War II, Dr. Sistrunk used the GI Bill to attend college. He joined the UA faculty after receiving a Ph.D. degree in 1962 and remained until he retired in 1985. He was one of the original faculty members when the Department of Horticultural Food Science (now Food Science) was started in 1968. He helped develop “blue lake” pole and bush beans as a commercial variety and was a charter member of the Institute of Food Technology.
He is survived by three sons, a daughter, nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A memorial fund has been established for Food Science scholarships. Memorials may be made to the William Sistrunk Scholarship Fund, c/o Laurence Sistrunk, 8700 Bent Tree Drive, College Station, Texas 77845.
