Dr. Nathan Slaton, Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences, received the Robert E. Wagner Young Scientist Award from the Potash and Phosphate Institute. Cliff Snyder of Conway, PPI southeast director, presented the award May 22 in the office of CSES interim department head Dr. Robert Bacon.
Snyder said the award, which comes with a $5,000 cash prize, is the highest honor bestowed by PPI. It recognizes "leadership and accomplishments toward efficient, competitive agriculture based on sound science and in harmony with environmental and human values."
Snyder said two Robert E. Wagner Award recipients, one each in categories younger than 45 and older than 45, are selected each year by an international committee.
Slaton is director of the Division of Agriculture’s Soil Testing Program. He teaches and conducts research in soil fertility and plant nutrition with an emphasis on rice, wheat and soybean production. He works in the area of nutrient management for phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients like zinc and boron.
