newsletter for faculty, staff and students May-June 2005 Vol. 31, No. 3 Tyson Family Donates $4 Million to College and Division
A $7.6 million gift from Don Tyson and his family announced May 13 includes $4 million for Bumpers College and the University of Arkansas System’s statewide Division of Agriculture. The gift also includes $2 million to help establish the David and Barbara Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History and $1.6 million for construction of a new Sigma Nu fraternity house. The gift was announced at a press conference in front of the John W. Tyson Building, named for Don’s father and the founder of Tyson Foods, which is headquarters of the UA Center of Excellence for Poultry Science. Present were Don Tyson, who became president of Tyson Foods in 1966; John H. Tyson, current chairman and CEO; Barbara Tyson, wife of the late Randal Tyson, Don’s brother; and Don’s daughters, Cheryl and Carla.
Chancellor John White, Vice President for Agriculture Milo Shult and Dean Greg Weidemann noted the many examples of the Tyson family’s support for the University, the Division and the College. Major gifts in just the last 10 years have included contributions toward construction of the John W. Tyson Building, the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House, the University of Arkansas Press and the Randal Tyson Track Center; and endowments for the Randal Tyson Memorial Scholarship and the Donald “Buddy” Wray Chair in Food Safety.
