Symposium Focuses on ‘Beef Marketing Revolution’

A two-day symposium June 9-10 at the Clarion Inn in Fayetteville sponsored by the Animal Science Department will feature nationally recognized authorities on genetics and marketing in the beef industry. It begins at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, and concludes with lunch on the 10th.

The “Beef Marketing Revolution” symposium is billed as one of the best beef cattle programs ever held in the state. It will have a centennial theme of celebrating the first 100 years of the Animal Science Department by looking at the future of the beef cattle industry. Three of the original seven departments when the College was established in 1905 were Animal Husbandry, Dairy Husbandry and Veterinary Science.

The first half of the program is titled “The Marketing Revolution in the Beef Industry.” Topics and speakers are “Contract Selling - How Far Will it Go?,” by Dr. Gary Smith, Colorado State University; “The New Beef Market,” by Dr. Mike Sands, Informa Economics; and “The New World of Beef Marketing,” by Ken Stettmeir, a Wal-Mart beef merchandising manager.

The program on Friday is  titled “The Genetic Revolution for the Beef Industry.” Dr. Larry Benyshek, University of Georgia, will speak on “Applying Genetic Marker Technology, EPDs (expected progeny differences) and Beyond.” Dr. Glen Doelzal, Excel Corp., will speak on the topic of “Where Will Technology Lead Us?”
