newsletter for faculty, staff and students May-June 2005 Vol. 31, No. 3 Golf Tournaments Provide Scholarships and Research FundsThree annual golf tournaments help support scholarships and academic programs of Bumpers College and research and extension programs of the Division of Agriculture. The seventh annual Golf and Sports Turf Classic (Horticulture) and the sixth annual Poultry Science Scholarship Tournament were held in April. The sixth annual Delta Scholarship Classic (Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences) will be held July 15 at the Helena Country Club. Golf and Sports Turf Classic
Twenty-two teams participated in the Golf and Turf Sports Turf Classic at Stonebridge Meadows Golf Club April 25. The tournament raised about $15,000 in scholarship and research money for the Turfgrass and Landscape Horticulture program in the Department of Horticulture. The team from Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock shot a 69 to win the tournament. Second place in the Championship Flight went to Ozarks Electric and third place to Longhills Golf Club. The First Flight winners were Golf Course Superintendents Association of Arkansas, first place; Pinnacle Country Club, second; and AgHeritage Farm Credit Services, third. The prize for Most Golf for the Money went to the Helena Chemical team. Poultry Science TournamentA record 33 teams raised just over $20,000 for poultry science scholarships during the Poultry Science Scholarship Golf Tournament April 26 at the Valley View Golf and Country Club in Farmington. First place winners in the morning flight were Jim Antwine, Jason Ballard, Kevin Gewin and Joey Ray of Motomco with a score of 60. Second place winners were Larry Butler, Virgil Holloway, Jeff Pharr and Perry Web of Food Processing Equipment Company, also with a score of 60. (Ties were determined by scorecard playoffs.) Third Place went to Clint Grimsley, Bill Hodge, Randy Jones and Tim Kasinger of Ag Forte, LLC. Larry Butler of FPEC won the closest to the pin prize on hole 13, Dennis Lester of the UA Feed Mill team won for the longest drive on hole 4 and Joe Parsley of Degussa Corp., and Brad Bowen of Cumberland tied in the morning putting contest. First place winners in the afternoon flight were Daryl Muldoon, P.D. Rakestraw, Tom Roark and Bill Templer of Simmons Foods with a score of 57. Second place winners were Mark Cook, Randy Counts, Mark Cox and Jamie Statler of Aerotech with a score of 58. Third place winners were Hex Bisbee, Rick Barrows, Sean Barrows and Shaun Penny of Multi-Craft with a score of 61. Closest to the pin was Sherri Barnhill of Barnhill Poultry, longest drive winner was Syd Tatum of Alpharma and the afternoon putting contest winner was Howard Lester of the UA Feed Mill. Since the poultry tournament started six years ago, over $100,000 has been raised through this event for scholarships in the department. CSES Delta Scholarship Classic About 125 players representing 31 companies participated in the Delta Scholarship Classic last year and raised about $23,000. Since the first Delta Classic in 2000, more than $90,000 has been raised for scholarships. Johnny Roach of Monticello is the organizer for the tournament this year. He is a member of the CSES Alumni and Friends group, which established the tournament to help recruit students for the Crop Management and Environmental, Soil and Water Science majors. This year’s event will be July 15 at Helena Country Club.
