Faculty provide Honors ‘Program’

The “program” in the Honors Program is provided by faculty members who make an extra effort to teach honors courses and mentor students, director Duane Wolf said at the spring faculty meeting April 30.

Dr. Wolf reported that 75 students were enrolled as of spring 2004, compared to 50 the previous year. Six students graduated as honors program distinguished graduates.

Two vital parts of the Honors Program are the honors courses and the undergraduate research and creative projects conducted with the assistance of a faculty mentor. Both parts require a major commitment by faculty members, Dr. Wolf said.
“Working with these highly motivated students is a lot of fun, but it does take time and effort,” he said.

Additional Honors Program courses and mentors will be needed to support continued enrollment growth, he said.

Current Bumpers College honors courses and instructors include Honors Orientation, Duane Wolf; Personal Excellence, Jean Turner and William Bailey; Management and Leadership, Nolan Arthur; Professional Development, Jennifer Webb; Exploring Ethics, Nick Anthony; Honors Debate, Curt Rom; Laboratory Rotations, Gisela Erf; Classical Readings, Jason Emmert; Project Proposal Preparation, William Bailey and Navam Hettiarachchy; and Honors Thesis (6 hours), faculty mentors.

Sixty-one faculty members served as mentors for honors student projects in 2003-04.
