CSES honors friends, outstanding graduate

Josh Allen of Springdale and Steve Brown of Lowell were named Friends of the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences and Jim Bidlack of Edmond, Okla., was named Outstanding Graduate at an awards banquet April 5 at the Clarion Inn.

CSES Awards -- Steve Brown, left, director of raw products for Allen's, Inc. was named a 2007 Friend of the Department by the Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Department.  He is presented the award by interim department head Robert Bacon, right, and professor emeritus Ron Talbert. Josh Allen, executive vice-president for operations at Allen Inc., was also named a friend of the department, but was not present at the banquet.

Josh Allen is executive vice president for operations of Allen's, Inc., formerly Allen Canning Company, based in Siloam Springs. He has served on the board of directors of Northwest Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute and the University of Arkansas Executive Forum.

In 2004, Allen was recognized by the Arkansas Business Journal as a Top 40 under 40 Executive in Arkansas. In 2005, he was appointed to a four-year term on the first State of Arkansas Agriculture Department Advisory Board.

Steve Brown is director of raw products for Allen's, Inc. He received a B.S. degree in dairy science in 1974 from the University of Arkansas. He was a field man working with vegetable and fruit growers for Pioneer Foods and then Steele Canning Company, which was acquired by Allen Canning Co. in 1978.

Interim department head Robert Bacon said Allen and Brown have been strong supporters of research programs and the Delta Classic Golf Tournament, which has raised $154,000 over the last seven years for CSES scholarships.

Jim Bidlack has a B.S. degree from Purdue University and an M.S. degree in agronomy (1986) from the University of Arkansas under Dr. Charles A. Stutte. After completing a Ph.D. at Iowa State University in 1990, he became an assistant professor of biology at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

Now a professor at UCO, Bidlack teaches general biology, plant biology, plant physiology, plant anatomy, and molecular cell physiology. He received UCO's Presidential Partner's Excellence in Teaching Award.
