College’s first Web-based degree program well received
The first Web-based degree program offered by Bumpers College has met with an enthusiastic reception, says Nolan Arthur, associate professor of Agricultural and Extension Education.
Dr. Arthur is program chair for the Master of Science in Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences Non-Thesis Degree program with an emphasis in food safety.
Dr. Arthur said 16 students from about six states began the program in the spring semester and others have been accepted for the summer and fall. He said inquiries about the program are coming from throughout the United States, plus one from Canada.
The 30-hour, web-based, non-thesis, M.S. degree program allows the student to select an emphasis area in food safety for concentrated study of food safety and quality issues in the food industry.
The UA Division of Continuing Education, whose staff works with faculty members to develop and deliver Web-based course content, coordinates the program.
Bumpers College Associate Dean Donna Graham provided leadership to initiate the program. Julie Goldman, Continuing Education, is program coordinator.
More information about the program is available online at www.uacted.uark.edu/OnlineDegrees/AgriFoodSafetyQuality/Master/index.htm.
A similar program is available for post baccalaureate course credit with 15 credit hours required to obtain a Certificate of Proficiency as either a Food Safety Manager or HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) Coordinator in the food industry. Details are online at
