newsletter for faculty, staff and students March-April 2005 Vol. 31, No. 2 Graduate Study Abroad Opportunity Dr. Andy Proctor, Food Science, and a colleague in Belgium have developed a new international exchange program for graduate study in renewable resources and clean technology at home and abroad.
The Renewable Resources and Clean Technology International Exchange Program allows students from three U.S. universities to exchange with students from three European partners, Proctor said. The students will pay tuition only to their home universities and the program pays the students’ travel and living expenses for five months abroad. It will also cover the cost of language training, if needed. The curriculum will include courses and projects in primary bio-production; unit operations in clean technology; renewable resources from carbohydrates, wood, lipids and proteins; bio-fuels; bio-energy; high-value added products; and socio-economic concerns. The program was conceived and developed by Proctor and Dr. Roland Berhe of the University of Ghent, Belgium. It is funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education and the European Commission’s Directorate General for Education and Culture. “Through this program, three students from each of the participating American and European universities will study in the participating European universities and three students from each of the European institutions will study at the U.S. partners,” Proctor said. Besides the U of A, the American institutions include Iowa State University and the University of Washington. The European institutions are the University of Ghent, Belgium, the Karl-Franzens University of Graz, Austria and the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse, France. The “multi-institute, multidiscipline” program is open to graduate students from any college on campus, Proctor said. Applications are being accepted for the fall 2005 semester.
