newsletter for faculty, staff and students March-April 2005 Vol. 31, No. 2 Interior Design Instructor Wins Award What started out as an opportunity for her interior design students resulted in national recognition for interior design instructor Betty Loewer, who recently received the an American Society for Engineering Education Best Paper Award at the 2005 Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration (CIEC) in Savannah, Ga. Loewer's paper reported on the participation of her students in the Students Engaged in Economic Development (SEED) program of University of Arkansas Economic Development Institute (UAEDI). It was presented at the 2004 CIEC meeting and selected as the Best Paper by a vote of the conference attendees and leadership. The class project entailed designing the interior space for the Technology Center for the Delta (TCD) in Cross County. Envisioned as a multifunction facility to serve the needs of businesses and individuals in Cross and St. Francis counties, the TCD will have distance learning classrooms, training facilities, office suites, a restaurant, a day care facility, conference rooms, and an exhibit hall. "By connecting faculty with community partners, UAEDI provides an easy and efficient mechanism for faculty to find real projects for their students," said UAEDI director Otto Loewer. "Students obtain valuable experience that will be useful as they seek employment. And community partners gain valuable perspectives on their projects."
