Centennial celebration begins with Honors Day reception

Producing graduates trained in scientific agriculture was one of the mandates of the Arkansas Industrial University when it was established in 1872 under the terms of the Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862.

First Graduate - Hugh Ellis Morrow of Fayetteville, one of 31 graduates in the class of 1904, was the first to receive the bachelor of science in agriculture degree from the University of Arkansas. (UA Libraries, Special Collections)

The faculty at what soon became the University of Arkansas offered courses in agricultural sciences, but few students enrolled in what was then a radical departure from the standard university curriculum of the arts, languages, basic sciences, law and religion.

It was not until 1904 that Hugh Ellis Morrow of Fayetteville became the first graduate to receive the bachelor of science in agriculture degree. The College of Agriculture was established the next fall, in 1905.

Celebration of the centennial year of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas will begin with Honors Day festivities, Thursday, April 21, in the Arkansas Union.

Students, alumni, faculty and staff (and the public) are encouraged to attend a centennial kickoff reception in the Anne Kittrell Gallery at 2 p.m., following the annual Honors Convocation awards program, which starts at 1 p.m., in the Arkansas Union Theatre.

An exhibit on the history of Bumpers College will be unveiled at the reception, and a 24-page illustrated booklet with a summary of the College’s history will be provided at no charge.

One hundred peals of the William and JoElla Toller Celebration Bell at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House at 3 p.m. will signify the College's 100 years and its 9,965 living alumni. The Arkansas Alumni Association database includes 11,593 names of UA alumni with degrees in the agricultural, food and life sciences.

A centennial lecture series is planned for the fall, and a time capsule and special marker will be placed in the Agriculture Building. Details will be announced on a special centennial Website: www.Bumpers100.uark.edu.

The celebration will conclude with a “Party of the Century” gala set for Dec. 3 at the Northwest Arkansas Convention Center to include distinguished speakers, a banquet and entertainment.
