Delta Classic raises scholarship funds

   
Casey Hutto made a generous contribution to the CSES sholarship fund with his winning auction bid for an autographed Darrin McFadden jersey at the Delta Classic Scholarship Golf Tournament.   Scholarship recipients introduced at the tournament were, from left, Tyler Haynes of Jones, La.; Nicholas Inman of Wabash; Kyle Fuller of Poplar Grove; and Zoe Teague of Jonesboro.  

The Delta Classic Scholarship Golf Tournament July 13 at the Helena Country Club raised more than $35,000 to fund scholarships for students in the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences.

The annual tournament has raised over $195,000 for scholarships in eight years. Forty students have received scholarships, and an endowment is being built so that investment earnings can fund more scholarships in the future, interim Department Head Robert Bacon said.

Delta Classic scholarships for 2007-08 have been awarded to Ann Alexandra of Tulsa, Jason Carter of Marianna, Kyle Fuller of Poplar Grove, Tyler Hornbeck of DeWitt, Nicholas Inman of Wabash, JonathanShipps of Springdale, Zoe Teague of Jonesboro andTyler Haynes of Jones, La.

Adam Compton of North Little Rock organized this year’s tournament.  A salesman with Helena Chemical Company, he is a member of the CSES Alumni and Friends group established in 1999, which started the tournament to help recruit students.

Compton said, “The members of CSES Alumni and Friends put in many hours to put together the tournament. The Helena Country Club is a very gracious host and makes it easy for us.  In addition to awarding Delta Classic Scholarships to students for the past eight years, we have been able to put aside $81,000 toward the endowment of the James L. Barrentine scholarship. This year’s tournament will put us a step closer to reaching our goal of $100,000 for the endowment.”

Other CSES Alumni and Friends who helped organize and participated in this year’s tournament were Jim Barrentine of Fayetteville, Dean Bell and Brad Koen of DeWitt, Mason Bennett of Jonesboro, Matt Cordell of Lonoke, Brian Cornelious of Marion, Josh Cunningham of Stuttgart, Otis Howe of Little Rock, William Johnson of Beebe, Brittney Kaufman of Pine Bluff, Claude Kennedy of Marianna, Glen Kernodle of Wynne, Darrin Malone of Paragould, Dale Reed of Gillette, Johnny Roach of Monticello, Scott Rushing of Jonesboro, Ron Talbert of Fayetteville, Jerry Williams of Bella Vista, Chuck Wilson of Stuttgart, Gerald Wilson of Germantown, Tenn., and Ritchie Workman of Little Rock.

This year’s tournament sponsors were Allen Canning Company, Arkansas Farm Bureau, and Isle of Capri.  Hole sponsors were Ag Spectrum Company, BASF, Bayer CropScience, Cache River Valley Seed, LLC, Cheminova, Coco Distributors, Delta & Pine Land Seed Company, Dow AgroSciences, DuPont Crop Protection & Pioneer Hibred, Fuller Seed, Gillett Grain Service, In., Graves Enterprises, Inc., Helena Chemical Company, Hickory Hills Pharmacy, Hornbeck Seed, Mary Louise Demoret & V. Poindexter Fiser, Mid-south Ag, Monsanto, Producers Rice Mill, Progeny Ag Products, Stratton Seed Company, Inc., and Syngenta Crop Protection.  Team sponsors were Adams Fertilizer Equipment, Ag Chem, Dean-Henderson Equipment, First Bank of the Delta, N.A., Hardy Sales & Service, Malone’s OK Tire, RiceTec, Inc., Stanley & Co. Crop Insurance, UAP Midsouth, Valent, and Western Auto of Forrest City.  Tournament donors included Bank of Fayetteville, Black Hawk Warehouse, Delta King Seed Company, Inc., Estes, Inc. Gerber Products, Helena Country Club, Helena National Bank, Mack’s Prairie Wings, and Southern Agronomic.

Over 96 players representing 21 companies participated in the four-player scramble. Prizes were awarded to the top teams and to the closest to the pin, longest drive and longest putt.
