Notables

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness

Kerri Boling, Misti Clark, Ashley Jones, Laura Sossamon, andfaculty sponsor Jennie Popp from AEAB were among the participants who participated in the International Service Learning program in Belize May 20 through June 15. The goal of their project was to develop a vegetable garden on the grounds of St. Matthew’s School in Pomona. 

R.I. Carreira and Christiane Schroeter, assistant professor at Arkansas State University, presented a paper, “Childhood Obesity in the U.S.: How Effective are School Prevention Programs?” at the American Agricultural Economics Association annual meeting July 29-Aug. 1 in Portland.

Animal Science

The D. E. King Equine Program was well represented at the 2007 Equine Science Society (ESS) symposium in Baltimore. Faculty and students presented four research papers and two research posters. Those attending were students Kellie Hampy, Laura McKenzie, and Jana Reynolds, Program Director N. E. Jack, Barn Manager/Event Coordinator Kathi Jogan, Arena Manager Danny Belcher, and State Equine Extension Specialist Steve Jones.

Foods, Human Nutrition and Hospitality

Jerald Foote won the “Outstanding Dietetics Educator of the Year” award presented by the Arkansas Dietetic Association and will represent the State of Arkansas with the award for The American Dietetic Association. Foote gave an invited presentation, "Evaluating the Safety & Efficacy of Dietary Supplements: A Clinician’s Perspective," to the Mid-Continental Association of Food and Drug Officials March 28.

Food Science

Terry J. Siebenmorgen received the 2007 Food Processing Suppliers Association Foundation – Food Process Engineering Institute Food Engineering Award, recognizing him as a Distinguished Food Engineer.

Luke Howard gave a seminar entitled "Processing effects on berry polyphenolics" at the Berry Health Benefits Symposium held June 11-12 in Corvallis, Ore.

Ph.D. student Vishal Jain received two international graduate student awards at the American Oil Chemists Society Annual Meeting in May at Montreal. He received a 2007 Honored Student Award and the 2007 Peter & Claire Kalustian Scholarship of The American Oil Chemists' Society, as the outstanding Honor Student. Vishal was also invited to present a paper on his research, 'Pilot plant production of CLA-rich soy oil by photoirradiation', which is supervised by his adviser Andy Proctor. These awards are open to international competition between graduate students doing research in fats and oils throughout the world. Selection is based on classroom performance and research quality.

Arvind Kannan was selected as a semi-finalist for the Phi Tau Sigma Graduate Research Paper Competition at the national Institute of Food Technologist’s annual meeting to be held July 28 – August 1 in Chicago. His adviser is Navam Hettiarachchy.

Ilanko Paraman is one of the five finalists in the Food Chemistry Division Poster Competition at the national Institute of Food Technologists.  The finals are scheduled for July 30 from 12-2:30 PM at the Hyatt McCormick Regency in Chicago. His adviser is Navam Hettiarachchy.

Justin Morris presented invited talks on "Evaluation of Wines Made from New Cultivars" to the Midwest Grape and Wine Conference at Osage Beach, Mo., Feb. 5, and on "The Future of Muscadines," at the Florida Grape Grower’s Assoc. annual meeting in Ocala, Fla., in January. He was an invited Judge for the Florida International Wine Competition in Tampa in February.

Jean François Meullenet and Sensory Lab Supervisor Tonya Tokar conducted the second Sensory Evaluation Workshop June 26-27. Other speakers were Karen Flake of Flake-Wilkerson Market Insights, Little Rock and Michele Bond of CJRW, Springdale.  There were nineteen attendees, including representatives of Advance Food Company in Enid OK, USDA, LSU, UAPB, Barton Brands of Owensboro KY, Van Tone Flavors of Terrell TX, DairiConcepts of Springfield MO and TIC Gums in Belcamp MD.

Horticulture

Mike Richardson was the keynote speaker at the Scotts/Pure-Seed Testing Field Day in Rolesville, N.C., June 14.
