Opportunity for Students in US-EU ‘Renewable Resources and Clean Technology’ Exchange Program
A unique opportunity awaits Bumpers College seniors or graduate students to receive financial support for a research and study program in Europe in the new transatlantic “Renewable Resources and Clean Technology Program" funded by federal education agencies in the United States and European Union. Dr. Andy Proctor, Food Science, University of Arkansas coordinator for the program, said three of five spaces available for 2006-2007 have been filled. Interested agriculture, science and engineering seniors and graduate students should contact Proctor by Sept. 15 to apply for the spring and summer 2007 semesters at 575-2980 or aproctor@uark.edu. Participants will take classes and conduct research at European universities on the use of renewable biomaterials as biofuels, plastic alternatives and other products. The program includes financial support and language training for students, Proctor said. Four UA students participated in 2005-2006 at the University of Gent in Belgium on biodeisel production, biodeisel economics and at the University of Graz in Austria on novel use of starch and natural flavors. The UA exchange students -- Devon Cameron, Brian Mattingly, Daniel Skipper and Caroline Lovely discussed their experiences in an April 2006 article (PDF) about the program published in INFORM, a magazine published by the American Oil Chemists Society. The U of A is leading the United States consortium that includes Iowa State University and the University of Washington. European Union partners are the University of Gent in Belgium, the University of Graz in Austria and Toulouse Polytechnic University in France. The exchange program provides opportunities for faculty and students to be involved in biorenewable materials and clean technology research at leading European institutions, Proctor said. On August 21st, Dr. Anton Huber, a visiting professor from Graz will give a presentation on opportunities for students to study in Austria at 1.30 p.m. in Poultry Science L133. On September 15th, Dr. Thierry Talou will be visiting from France to discuss research and education opportunities at Toulouse for a semester. This fall, five European students from Graz and Gent will be studying at the University of Arkansas in Bumpers College and the College of Engineering: Angela Chemelli, Graz, will focus on starch utilization with Dr. Ya-Jane Wang in Food Science and Dr. James Patindol. Claire Jeanquartier, Graz, will focus on hydrogen production with Dr. Ed Clausen in Chemical Engineering. Tom Messiaen, Gent, will work on natural antioxidants with Dr. Luke Howard in Food Science. Axel Schlagenhau, Graz, will focus on low energy supercritical extraction processing with Dr. Jerry King in Chemical Engineering. Ellen Van Loo, Gent, will study low energy, reduced solvent use in lipid analysis and utilization with Dr. Andy Proctor in Food Science. |
