Dr. Joe Darell Widick, 1942-2006

Dr. Joe Darell Widick, a Division of Agriculture soybean breeder based at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, died June 14 at his residence in Jonesboro. He was 64.

Dr. Widick was born in Springfield, Tenn. He had a B.S.A. degree from the University of Tennessee and received M.S. and Ph.D. (1978) degrees in plant breeding and genetics from the University of Arkansas.

Since 1982, Dr. Widick has been a Division of Agriculture plant breeder with an emphasis on developing soybeans adapted to high soil salt content, low fertility and extremes in pH. He also developed and evaluated genotypes for narrow row and double-crop applications and evaluated genotypes for nematode resistance.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Carter Widick of the home; two sons, Kevin Darell Widick of Bono and Joe Kyle Widick of Jonesboro; and a grandson, Noah Joseph Widick of Bono.
