Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture A newsletter for faculty, staff and students July-August 2005 Vol. 31, No. 4 Delta Classic raises UA scholarship funds Students majoring in crop management and in environmental, soil, and water sciences at the University of Arkansas will have more scholarship opportunities thanks to participants in the sixth annual Delta Classic Scholarship Golf Tournament July 15 at the Helena Country Club.
The tournament raised more than $30,000 to fund scholarships for students in the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the U of A, said department head Dr. Jim Barrentine. Thirty-three students have already received scholarships from the fund, he said. Delta Classic scholarships for the 2005-2006 school year were awarded to Sammy Booker of Marion, Andrew Gill of McGehee, Keisha Koehn of Omaha, Ashley Lewis of De Queen, Jacob Monroe of Jonesboro, Turner Sibley of Helena, and Brent Johnson, Steven Ussery and Josh Wilson, all of West Helena. Over 140 players representing 36 companies participated in the four-player scramble. Prizes were awarded to the top teams and to the closest to the pin, longest drive and longest putt.
The England Farmers team of Orlan Roper, Jimmy Wallace, Rod Rockwell, and Jackie Cothren, all of England, won the tournament’s first flight. The UAP Midsouth team of Ruben Garza and Mike Hatfield of England, and Kenny Euseppi and Clay Jeter of Altheimer won the second flight. The Syngenta team of Patrick Ewan, Ralph Lackney, Tony Lourens, and Steve Harrison, all of Cordova, Tenn., won the third flight. “We appreciate the participation and generosity of the companies and individuals who have made the Delta Classic a success,” Barrentine told the tournament participants. “Your involvement helps the young men and women in our department start their college career." Johnny Roach of Monticello organized this year’s tournament. A salesman with Hornbeck Seed Company, Inc., he is a member of the CSES Alumni and Friends group established in 1999, which started the tournament to help recruit students. Roach said, “The members of CSES Alumni and Friends put in many hours to put together the tournament. In addition to awarding Delta Classic Scholarships to students for the past six years, last year we were able to put aside $25,000 toward the endowment of the James L. Barrentine scholarship. This year’s tournament will put us a step closer to reaching our goal of $100,000 for the endowment.” Other CSES Alumni and Friends who participated in this year’s tournament and helped organize it were Jamey Boney of Marion, Adam Compton of North Little Rock, Brian Cornelious of Marion, Josh Cunningham of Lonoke, Otis Howe of Little Rock, Glen Kernodle of Wynne, Dave Lee of Clarendon, David Lee of Collierville, Tenn., Darrin Malone of Paragould, Scott Rushing of Jonesboro, Mason Bennett of Jonesboro and Gerald Wilson of Germantown, Tenn.
