newsletter for faculty, staff and students July-August 2004 Vol. 30, No. 4 Delta Classic raises CSES scholarship funds HELENA --- Students majoring in crop management and in environmental, soil and water sciences will have more scholarship opportunities thanks to participants in the fifth annual Delta Classic Scholarship Golf Tournament July 16 at the Helena Country Club.
The tournament raised more than $23,000 to fund scholarships for students in the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the U of A, said department head Dr. Jim Barrentine. Twenty-three students have already received scholarships from the fund, he said.
Delta Classic scholarships for the 2004-2005 school year were awarded to Drew Carter and Clint Roth of Stuttgart, Lindsay Copenhaver of Conway, Jared Fannon of Holly Grove, Grant Hunt of Brinkley, Robbie Polk of Marvell, and Timothy Graham of Poteau, Okla. Over 124 players representing 31 companies participated in the four-player scramble. Prizes were awarded to the top teams and to the closest to the pin, highest score, longest drive and longest putt. The DP&L Seed Company team of Danny Gonzalez of Marion, Dean Chambliss of Pine Bluff, Tad Thornton of Pine Bluff, and Randy Smith of Pine Bluff won the tournaments first flight. The Farm Bureau team of Bruce Tencleve, Gene Martin, Steve Eddington, and Ewell Welch, all of Little Rock, won the second flight. The Helena Chemical Team of Allen Underwood, Bob Mack, Bobby Alford and Ben Underwood, all of Collierville, Tenn., had the highest score. Gerald Wilson of Germantown, Tenn., an alumnus of the department, organized this years tournament. A salesman with Cheminova, Inc., he is a member of the CSES Alumni and Friends group established in 1999, which started the tournament to help recruit students.
The Delta Classic has enhanced the visibility of the department, Bumpers College and the University of Arkansas in eastern Arkansas, Barrentine said. The support of businesses in West Helena and Helena has been valuable in maintaining the success of the tournament. The support of Isle of Capri and Farm Bureau have provided us continuity in hosting this tournament for the past five years.
