newsletter for faculty, staff and students July-August 2004 Vol. 30, No. 4 Bumpers College sponsors Livestock Judging Camp More than 30 4-H and FFA students from Arkansas and Missouri honed their competitive skills at the University of Arkansas Livestock Judging Camp June 7-9.
The students in grades 4 through 12 learned how to evaluate cattle, sheep and hogs and how to describe the reasons for their determinations, said Bryan Kutz, instructor in the Department of Animal Science in Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. Members of the U of A Livestock judging team helped train the students at beginner, intermediate and advanced skill levels. Kutz said most of the advanced participants were honing their skills in preparation for the Arkansas 4-H Orama, which will be held at the U of A in July. The purpose of livestock judging, Kutz said, is to evaluate an animal's fitness relative to its intended function. "For each species, we judge how an animal's structure, volume, balance, breed characteristics and other factors suit depending on whether it will be used for breeding or grown for market," he said. The students who participated in this year's Livestock Judging Camp are listed below by county. Barry County, Mo.: Tiffany
