Agricultural & Extension Education Dave Edmark is serving as president of the Northwest Arkansas chapter of the Public Relations Society of America for 2007. He is also serving this year as historian/webmaster for the Arkansas chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society for agriculture. Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness Graduate student Caroline Boen was elected as a senator in the UA Associated Student Government Senate. Biological & Agricultural Engineering Otto Loewer gave an invited presentation at the 100 Young Scientists Forum at Zhejiang University in China Oct. 31 and to students at the School of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science on Nov. 2. His topic was "The Future of Agricultural and Biological Engineering... and Why?" The following students are the recent inductees and officers for Alpha Epsilon: Pradbhakar Deonikar, Treasurer; V. Venkatakrishnan, President; Leslie Bartsch, Secretary; Thomas F. Garrison, Vice President; and Sunny Wallace, Past President. Crop, Soil & Environmental Sciences David Miller gave a presentation about soils and soil profiling careers to seven 8th grade classes at Springdale Central Junior High School Feb. 6. Entomology Randy Luttell gave the invited presentation, “Bollworm issues in transgenic cotton,” at the Cotton Incorporated, Crop Management Seminar in Memphis Nov. 1. Gus Lorenz also gave a volunteered presentation at the meeting. Fred Stephen, Melissa Fierke and J. A. Tullis coauthored the invited presentation, “Red oak borer in Ozark forests: Tracking the rise and fall of a native tree-killing cerambycid,” at the Entomological Society of America’s National Meeting in Indianapolis Dec. 10-13. Dr. Stephen also gave the invited presentation, “Forest health and forest insects,” at the meeting. Volunteered presentations were given by Drs. Stephen and Fierke, Laurel Haavik, Larry Galligan, Donn Johnson, Sandra Sleezer, Barbara Lewis, T.J. Kring, Marita Lih, Cesar Solorzano, Carrie Owens, Allen Szalanski and Robert Wiedenmann. Kyle Colwell, Gus Lorenz, Jarrod Hardke and Craig Shelton gave volunteered presentations at the Arkansas Crop Protection Association Technical Conference in Fayetteville Nov. 27. Laurel Haavik, Robin Verble and Fred Stephen gave a volunteered poster presentation at the Arkansas Entomological Society in October. Robert Wiedenmann presented the keynote address, “Control Biológico de Malezas en Áreas Naturales en los Estados Unidos,” at the Congress of the Mexican Society of Biological Control in Manzanillo, Mexico, Nov. 10. The Department of Entomology led a trip January 3-7 to the mountain forests near Angangueo, Michoacan in Central Mexico to see the overwintering site of as many as a hundred million monarch butterflies. (See Headlines.) Horticulture Aaron Patton recently joined the Department of Horticulture as Turfgrass Extension Specialist. Patton is originally from Bloomington, Indiana. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. at Purdue University and B.S. at Iowa State University. Food Science Ph.D candidate Vishal Jain received the 2007 Honored Student Award of the American Oil Chemists' Society. Awardees are selected from North American, European and Asian Universities and present an invited paper at the 2007 AOCS annual meeting. Plant Pathology Yulin Jia was invited for the seminar, "Plants and Pathogens engage in trench warfare: New Knowledge learned from rice blast resistance gene Pi-ta," held Jan. 14 in the rice blast workshop of the 2007 Plant and Animal Genome conference in San Diego.Richard Cartwright, Extension Plant Pathologist and state extension leader for Pest Management, was presented the award for Outstanding Plant Pathologist of the Southern Division of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) for 2007. (See Headlines.)The award was presented at the annual meeting of the APS Southern Division held in conjunction with the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists meeting in Mobile Feb. 4-5.
