Dr. Barrentine had served as department head since 1997. He remains active as a consultant with the Cheminova plant protection chemical company.
During Dr. Barrentine’s tenure, the department name was changed from Agronomy to its current name. An advisory council of alumni and friends was organized, which assisted with recruiting and with the Delta Classic golf tournament. The annual golf event held in eastern Arkansas greatly enhanced the department’s scholarship endowment.
Also during his tenure, the department added minors in Wildlife Habitat and Crop Biotechnology.
Dr. Barrentine has B.S. and M.S. degrees in agronomy from the U of A and a Ph.D. in weed science from Purdue University.
Before joining the UA faculty, he had a distinguished career in the plant protection chemical industry, culminating in a position as director of North American Crop Technical Services, Development and Registration, for DowElanco.
Dr. Bacon has B.S. and M.S. degrees in agronomy from the U of A and a Ph.D. from Purdue University in plant breeding and genetics. He joined the faculty in 1984 to conduct breeding and production research with winter wheat, oats and canola.
Dr. Bacon teaches courses in plant breeding, cereal grain production and advanced crop science.
