700-plus attend ‘Party of the Century’

More than 700 alumni, students, faculty and staff of Bumpers College attended the “Party of the Century” Dec. 3 at the Northwest Arkansas Convention Center in Springdale. The gala event marked the end of a yearlong celebration of the Bumpers College Centennial.

Keynote speaker Sen. Dale Bumpers
Bumpers College Ambassadors, from left, Chris Looney, Erin Turrentine, Cara Hill, Ashley Swaffer, Jeff Pratt, Kerri Boling and Lindy Medlock pose in vintage clothing representing the eras spanned by the College's history.

Former governor and U.S. senator Dale Bumpers was keynote speaker. The U of A Board of Trustees named the College for Sen. Bumpers in 1995 to honor him for his service to the nation, the state and university. The senator said at the time, and again in his remarks at the gala, that naming the college for him was “the greatest honor that I have ever received.”

Master of ceremonies John Philpot

John Philpot, humorist and co-host of “Arkansas Outdoors” on the Arkansas Educational Television Network, was master of ceremonies. His entertaining monologues included original poetry, including “I’d Live in Arkansas.” Many guests at the gala requested a copy of the poem, which is provided below.

Philpot, of Little Rock, is a UA alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and a master’s degree in educational media. He was a radio and television specialist for the Division of Agriculture’s Cooperative Extension Service. In 1985, he launched his own company, an advertising agency and booking agency for his humor presentations. He was inducted into the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2005.

The gala atmosphere was enhanced by College Ambassadors modeling clothing from each decade of the College’s history, a video presentation featuring comments by retired faculty members and music by the Claudia Burson Quartet. More historical highlights were provided by a video that summarized the history of the college in two minutes and a PowerPoint slide show on the history of the College.

Those involved in planning the gala and other centennial events included:

Centennial Committee: Donna Graham – Chair, Vernoice Baldwin, Sandi Caster, Kim Cooper, Karen Eskew, Carl Griffis, Ashley Harris, Judy Howard, Howell Medders, John Rolloff and Roy Rom.

I’D LIVE IN ARKANSAS
BY JOHN PHILPOT

I’ve been the country over, the old man said to me,
From Canada to Mexico, from sea to shining sea.

I’ve lived by rules of people, I’ve lived by nature’s law,
But, if I had my druthers, I’d live in Arkansas.

The natives don’t see what they’ve got.  The youngsters want to roam.
They’ll search for years and never find just what they had back home.

Before truth becomes reality, they’ll be old men like me.
Nowhere can you find that much to see and do and be.

From the flatlands of the delta to the mountains of the west,
The beauty is spectacular; the people are the best.

Huntin’ down the road apiece; fishin’ that is first rate.
Nature’s smile took wings of flight and landed in this state.

If I had my druthers my cabin and my bed,
Would be right there in Arkansas with mallards overhead.

Whispering so softly as they made their southern flight,
And, fill my dreams with whistling wings soaring through the night.
