Crop Biotechnology Minor proposed

The Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences has proposed a minor in Crop Biotechnology as a new offering. If approved at the February meeting of the U of A Board of Trustees, the minor will be offered in the fall of 2006.

The new minor would provide basic and applied understanding of plant genetics and molecular biology and their applications for crop improvement. The courses will cover fundamental studies on plant sciences, genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry, and provide hands-on experience with a research project.

The minor is designed to provide broader job opportunities for the graduates or prepare them for post-graduate studies in biotechnology related fields. Graduates will be trained for employment in biotechnology companies and University/ Government laboratories.

Vibha Srivastava developed the proposal for the minor with assistance from Robert Bacon, Larry Purcell and Jim Barrentine.
