Dean reviews 2005 accomplishments For most measures, we are on track to meet our 2010 goals Robert Bacon is CSES interim head Professor Robert Bacon is serving as interim head of the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences following the retirement in December of Jim Barrentine. Robertson to coordinate Apparel Studies major Lona Robertson has joined the Bumpers College faculty as an associate professor and area coordinator for the Apparel Studies major in the School of Human Environmental Sciences. Food packaging, processing expert joins UA faculty Luben Morawicki, a senior scientist at Tyson Foods, will join the Food Science Department faculty February 13 as an assistant professor. He will develop a new teaching, research and extension program in food processing and packaging. AGCS adds digital media specialist Priya Kulkarni joined the Agricultural Communication Services staff as a digital media specialist (project/program specialist) in December. Donors provide new scholarships and building funds Gifts designated for Child Development building fund, Animal Science honors scholarships, Apparel Studies scholarships and Horticulture scholarships. Legislature applauds UA fruit breeding program A House concurrent resolution from the Arkansas Legislature applauds the Division of Agriculture fruit breeding program for its impact on the state’s economy. Crop Biotechnology minor proposed The Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences has proposed a minor in Crop Biotechnology as a new offering. If approved at the February meeting of the U of A Board of Trustees, the minor will be offered in the fall of 2006. Bumpers welcomes transfer students Bumpers College Associate Dean Donna Graham and others welcomed a larger than usual group of 25 students who attended the transfer student orientation sessions January 10. Magazine features U of A spinach breeding program Ann Kaiser, editor of Country Woman magazine likes digging her hands into other people’s dirt. So she fit in smoothly with the crew collecting spinach-breeding selections at the Division of Agriculture’s Vegetable Substation at Kibler, just south of Alma. Congratulations to fall graduates Congratulations to the AFLS graduating class of Fall 2005. The graduates are listed in the latest issue of “All About Advising.”Poultry science students win national awards for research Three Poultry Science students competed and won at the Southern Poultry Science Society Annual Meeting held in Atlanta Jan. 23-24. CSES students win ASA poster contest Students from the Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences Club won first place in the student poster contest at the Agronomy Society of America National Meeting. The meeting was held November 6-9 in Salt Lake City.
