Centennial exhibit and lecture series to kick off celebration
In observance of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Bumpers College, a Bumpers College Centennial Lecture Series is being planned to begin during Honors Week April 18-23.
Plans for the centennial celebration kickoff event are to unveil an exhibit on the history of the College during a reception in the AFLS Building atrium, followed by the first in a series of lectures in Hembree Auditorium.
Preliminary plans are being made for a number of additional centennial celebration activities, including the following.
- A Centennial gala event is being planned for the fall to include a distinguished speaker and a presentation about the history of the College.
- The Animal Science Department is observing the centennial by focusing on the beginning of the next 100 years with a conference on the "marketing revolution" in the cattle industry. The conference, scheduled for June 9-10, will feature nationally recognized experts from industry and universities for an audience of leading cattlemen from throughout the region.
- KUAF’s “Ozarks at Large” radio program is planning a series of stories about the historical context of selected current programs in various departments of the College.
- The centennial exhibit initially displayed in AFLS will also be displayed at other campus locations.
- A centennial video will be shown at a Razorback football game and other events.
- A special centennial publication will provide a summary of the history of the College based on the book, “History of the Bumpers College: Evolution of Education in the Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences,” by Gary Zellar and Nancy Wyatt, published in 1999 by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station as Special Report 194.
- Centennial articles are planned for the alumni magazines of the College Alumni Society (The Graduate) and the Arkansas Alumni Association (Arkansas) and the Division of Agriculture publication, Arkansas Land and Life.
- A centennial time capsule and special marker are being planned for a location to be determined.
