newsletter for faculty, staff and students January-February 2005 Vol. 31, No. 1 Dr. Martha Davis Retires Martha Davis, research associate professor, retired Dec. 31 following 26 years of teaching, service, and research in the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences. She was widely recognized as an innovative educator of undergraduate and graduate students in the area of written and oral communication skills. Dr. Davis developed and/or taught four different courses including Scientific Writing, Scientific Presentations, Agronomy Orientation, and Colloquium. She has been active in the American Society of Agronomy and was associate editor for the Journal of Natural Resources Life Science Education for nine years. The first edition of the book, Scientific Papers and Presentations, authored by Dr. Davis, sold more than 15,000 copies in the first four years following publication. The second edition was recently published by Elsevier Academic Press. A native of DeQueen, Dr. Davis received a B.S. degree in education from the University of Central Arkansas and spent three years as a public school teacher of English, Spanish and journalism. Her M.A. degree in English and doctorate in comparative world literature are from the U of A. She taught for one year at Murray State University in Kentucky, and joined the UA Agronomy Department in 1979.
