The UA Weed Team sponsored by the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences won yet another championship at the Southern Regional Weed Science Contest Aug. 6 at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Arkansas students won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards for individuals with the highest scores.
The Arkansas team, coached by Nilda Burgos and Jason Norsworthy, retained the coveted "Broken Hoe Trophy" as the team notched its 22nd win in 27 years since the contest's inception.
Landon Ries won the 1st place individual award and posted the high scores in Math (calibration) and Organic Peanut Production Problem. Sanjeev Bangarwa won 2nd place individual and had the high score on Weed ID and Herbicide Symptomology. Ean Alcober won 3rd place individual. Robbie Rorie had the high score on Atrazine Herbicide Problem with Peanuts.
Best Poster. In another event, CSES graduate student Eduardo Kawakami won 1st place in a poster competition at the "Plant Growth Regulator Society of America" annual meeting Aug. 3-7 in San Francisco.

2. Campus Blood Drive, Monday - Tuesday
Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will conduct a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the Arkansas Union ballroom. They will give away pizza and Guitar Hero shirts.

Forestry and wildlife field days are scheduled for Sept. 18 at the Southwest Research and Extension Center in Hope and on Oct. 11 at the Pine Tree Branch Station, Colt.

4. Not-So-New Faculty Lunch & Discussion, Thursday - Friday
The September "Not-So-New Faculty Lunch & Discussion" will be held Thursday, Sept. 11 and Friday, Sept. 12. This luncheon series, held at noon in the seminar room A in the Donald W. Reynolds Center, is for all faculty who have been at the University of Arkansas for at least three years.
The topic will be "E.L.C. at a Glance: Highlights and Overview of Service," with Dr. Charlotte J. Lee, director of the Enhanced Learning Center and Anne Raines, associate director of the Enhanced Learning Center. There will be Qdoba's Taco Bar (with meat and vegetarian choices) for lunch. Select either Thursday, Sept. 11, or Friday, Sept. 12. Please RSVP by noon Friday, Sept. 5, to Lori at the Cordes Teaching Center, 5-3222 or tfsc@uark.edu.

5. Ozark Regional Transit Adds Campus Stops
Ozark Regional Transit (ORT) will begin two new Commuter Express routes with stops on the University of Arkansas campus. Route 50 from Lincoln, Prairie Grove and Farmington will service the university as will Route 54 from Bentonville and Rogers. These routes began Sept. 2 and will be free until Sept. 12. A map and schedule for each route are available on the ORT Web site at www.ozark.org.

The annual Insect Festival, which never fails to draw hundreds of visitors of all ages, is set for Thursday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pauline Whitaker Arena on Garland Avenue. The Department of Entomology sponsors the festival, which is free and open to everyone.
Festival coordinator Don Steinkraus said the event will feature a live insect and arthropod zoo, the beautiful and exotic specimens of the University of Arkansas Arthropod Museum, live cockroach races, children's crafts, a cotton patch with working cotton gin, honey bee exhibits, insects in the arts and aquatic insects, among other exhibits and activities.
Entomology faculty and graduate students will be on hand to visit about insects and answer questions about any insect issues people might have.
