1. August Field Days

The Division of Agriculture is hosting a number of field days in August, beginning Aug. 1 with the Turf Field Day at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Fayetteville. See item 3, below, for details. Other field days are scheduled as follows.

Aug. 1. Turf Field Day. Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Fayetteville.    

Aug. 8. Rice Research and Extension, Stuttgart

Aug. 14. Arkansas Cattle Grower's Conference, Clark County Fairgrounds, Arkadelphia, sponsored by Southwest Research & Extension Center, Hope.

Aug. 15. Southern Pea Field Day. Vegetable Substation, Alma.

Aug. 16. Pine Tree Branch Station, Colt.

Aug. 23. Northeast Research and Extension, Keiser. Field day and observance of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Northeast Branch Station in 1957 as an expansion of the Alfalfa Substation in Osceola.

Aug. 30. Division faculty and staff will participate in the Judd Hill Field Day at Trumann, which is sponsored by the Judd Hill Foundation.

2. Charles Maxwell Receives Animal Management Award

Charles V. Maxwell Jr. was awarded the 2007 Animal Management Award, sponsored by Merial Limited, on July 9 at the annual meeting of the American Society of Animal Scientists in San Antonio.

After serving on the faculty at Oklahoma State University for 28 years, Maxwell accepted a position as professor of swine nutrition and management in the UA Animal Science Department in 1996. His research with the neonatal and early-weaned pig has resulted in a better understanding of the impact of management systems on performance of young pigs. Other areas of research have focused on sow management, the impact of nutrition on meat quality, and reducing phosphorus in swine wastes. He has published 72 refereed journal articles; 2 book chapters; over 300 abstracts, conference proceedings, and miscellaneous publications; and has presented 27 invited lectures nationally and internationally. Maxwell has been a member of the editorial board of the American Society of Animal Science and has served as chairman of several committees in the Southern Section of the ASAS.

3. Turf Field Day August 1 - Pre-register by July 25

A turf field day is set for Aug. 1 at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center off North Garland Ave., in Fayetteville.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with opening remarks at 8:45 a.m. at the Horticulture Department's turf research plots. Lunch at 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon program from 12:45 to 3 p.m. will be in the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Center.

The field day will feature new products and research studies as well as networking opportunities for turf industry professionals, students and researchers. Turfgrass research tours are available for those in lawn care/landscaping as well as those in golf/sports turf. A pesticide recertification training program will be offered in the afternoon.

A $30 pre-registration fee will cover lunch, a hat and information packet. Lunch is guaranteed only for those who pre-register by July 25. On-site registration is $35, not including lunch. Contact Jo Salazar in the Horticulture Department, 575-2604, or pre-register online at http://turf.uark.edu.
