1. Animal Science assists with Reciprocal Meat Conference

The animal science department helped organize and conduct the 62nd Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) this week, June 21-24, at the John Q. Hammons Convention Center in Rogers. Social activities include a golf tournament, a fun run, a softball tournament and a family picnic.

One of two keynote speakers, John Luchansky, will speak at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday on some of the key microbiological threats affecting meat products. Luchansky is research leader of the Microbial
Food Safety Research Unit at the Eastern Regional Research Center of the Agricultural Research Service, USDA, in Wyndmoor, Penn.

6. Gisela Erf's lab added to 'vitiligo road map'

Gisela Erf, Poultry Science, has been invited to participate in the vitiligo road map, which is posted on the National Vitiligo Foundation Web site to show the locations of productive centers of vitiligo research.

The purpose of the vitiligo road map is to inform the public and patients about research and to facilitate communication, interaction and collaboration among clinicians and researchers.

Erf conducts research in avian immunology and poultry health. A major portion of her program includes studies on the Smyth line chicken, an important animal model for human autoimmune vitiligo. The spontaneous onset and predictably high incidence of this autoimmune disorder in the Smyth line chicken provides unique opportunities to study the nature of autoimmune disease, including the role of the immune system, the environment and the target cells and tissue.

8. Graduate students offer diagnostic services at Farmers Market

Entomology and plant pathology graduate students are staffing diagnostic booths on alternating Satrudays from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Fayetteville Farmers Market. The public can bring their problem plants or questions to the booth located on the west side of the city square.

Graduate students will try to diagnose the cause of plant damage from samples, photos and descriptions and will submit samples for laboratory analysis if required to provide a diagnosis and recommendation. They also will provide information on current and upcoming plant management issues.

Samples of common insect pests and disease symptoms are provided and can be viewed under a microscope.

The booths are projects of the Plant Pathology Graduate Student Association, Terry Spurlock, president; and the Isley-Baerg Entomology Club, Josh Hannam, president.
