1. Alessi joins dean's staff

 
Carmen Alessi
 

Carmen Alessi has joined the Bumpers College administrative staff as Assistant to the Dean. 

Alessi came from the UA Office of Planned Giving in Development, where she was Administrative Assistant from Oct. 2005 - Feb. 2007. Prior to that, she was Administrative Office Supervisor for the UA Director of Football Operations from 1990-2005. In that position she worked closely with coaches on recruiting activities.

Alessi has a B.S. degree in education from the U of A and is working on a master's degree in workforce development in the College of Education. A native of St. Charles, Ill., she lived in Forrest City from the age of 10 and graduated from Forrest City High School.

Alessi is active in her church and is a member of the steering committee for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to support cancer research.

2. Winners Announced in GSD Oral, Poster Contests

Gamma Sigma Delta has announced the winners of the Feb. 27 student research competition. Students presented their own research in undergraduate, master's and doctoral categories. First, second and third places were awarded with students receiving respective awards of $100, $75 and $50 in each category for posters or oral presentations.

ORAL Presentation winners were as follows. Ph.D. category, first second and third place, respectively: Sam Markell, Maria Rosso and Vinod Shivrain. Master's category, first second and third place, respectively: Juan Monge, Stephen O'Brien and Michael Olivera.  Undergraduate category, first second and third place, respectively: Lindsay Starkey, Christina Pope and Brittany Adams.

POSTER Presentation winners were as follows: Ph.D. category, first second and third place, respectively: Tameka Bailey, Maria Rosso and Vidya Chitturi. Master's category, first second and third place, respectively: Yun Wang, Alice Donya and Franklin Lyons. Undergraduate category, first second and third place, respectively: Robby Shofner, Carmen Albright and Matt Hardin.

3. Faculty governance nominations needed

The deadline for submitting nominations for faculty governance positions for Bumpers College has been extended to March 16.

Haroon Sattar, HESC, asks on behalf of the Committee on Nominations and Election that faculty members consider running for one of the open positions listed or encourage a colleague for nomination. The open positions are Faculty Chair, Faculty Vice-Chair, Faculty Senate Representative, and committee member for Appointments, Tenure and Promotion.

4. Student Clubs offer lawnmower tuneup

The Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) and the Agricultural Mechanization (AgMech) Club are hosting a lawnmower tune-up clinic on March 9-10 at the Abernathy AgriScience Building at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center.

ACT and AgMech will accept mowers on March 9 between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Mower pick-up will be the following day by 5 p.m. Customers will be notified by phone when their mower is ready for pick-up.
The cost is $20 plus parts, with an average cost per mower of $25.

Tune-up includes changing spark plugs, filter and oil, and sharpening and balancing blade. Only push mowers in working order will be accepted.

The AgMech Club is for students who are interested in agricultural technology and mechanization. ACT is for students with an interest in agricultural communications.

5. Introduction to Health Insurance, Tuesday

The Pat Walker Health Center will present a one-hour "In-Sure Insurance" program Tuesday, March 13, at 5:30 p.m. in Arkansas Union 509. The program will provide an introduction to the purposes of health insurance and the basics health insurance. Free food will be provided.
