1. USDA General Counsel to Speak at Law School - Tuesday
The public is invited to an address by Marc L. Kesselman, general counsel of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, on Tuesday, April 1, at 1:15 p.m. in the E.J. Ball Courtroom at the Leflar Law Center. The program is sponsored by the National Agricultural Law Center and the School of Law.
Kesselman will discuss his perspectives on regulatory reform and agriculture. He will talk about a range of issues including the ongoing farm bill debate, climate change and environmental law issues associated with agriculture. The Arkansas chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture, initiated new members and presented faculty awards and student scholarships at an afternoon program March 25 in the Hembree Auditorium of the AFLS Building.
Faculty award recipients were: Teaching - Kristofor Brye, associate professor of crop, soil, and environmental sciences; Research - James McD. (Mac) Stewart, University Professor of crop, soil, and environmental sciences; and Extension - Michael French, associate director-programs, Cooperative Extension Service.
Student scholarship recipients were: Gamma Sigma Delta Scholarship - Katie Howard; Lippert Ellis Scholarship - Thomas Parker; and John W. White Scholarship - Rebekah Wingfield.

3. Horse Festival Raises Funds for Equine Progarm

| HORSE FESTIVAL -- Erin Bogle of Bentonville, a licensed two-star Parelli instructor, demonstrates the application of equine psychology to horse training during the ninth annual University of Arkansas Horse Festival March 29. Bogle is a 2003 graduate of Bumpers College with a degree in animal science. |
Visitors to the annual University of Arkansas Horse Festival Friday and Saturday were treated to a variety of demonstrations, workshops and performances, including the Texas Trick Riders and the One Arm Bandit Gang. Equine program director Nancy Jack said ticket sales and donations in connection with public events have provided more than $600,000 for the Dorothy E. King Equine Program.

4. Food Science Seminar - Monday
Ph.D. students Brittany Adams and Lauren Dooley will present seminars on, respectively, "Effect of extrusion on the polyphenolic and dietary fiber compositions of cranberry pomace," and "Lexicon development of lipid products using descriptive sensory analysis" at 3:40 p.m. Monday, March 31, in room D-2 in the Food Science Building.

5. ACT and AgMech Sponsor Lawn Mower Tune-Up Clinic - Friday and Saturday
The Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) and the Agricultural Mechanization (AgMech) Club will host a lawn mower tune-up clinic Friday and Saturday, April 4-5 at the Abernathy Agri-science Building at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center (1194 W Cassatt) off Garland Avenue, approximately two miles north of the U of A campus.
ACT and AgMech will accept mowers Friday, April 4 between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. Mower pick-up will be the following day, Saturday, April 5 by 5:00 p.m. Customers will be notified by phone when their mower is ready for pick-up. The cost of the maintenance is $25 per mower plus parts; the average cost is $30. Tune-up includes: changing spark plugs, filter and oil, and sharpening and balancing mower blade. Only push mowers in working order will be accepted.
"This has been one of our largest, successful fundraising events in the past," said Dru Glaze, ACT club vice-president. "We enjoy helping our community prepare for spring as they provide experience for both clubs." The money raised at the event will be used to support club travel and registration fees to regional and national competitions and events.
The AgMech Club is an education, professional development club for students who are interested in agricultural technology and mechanization. ACT is a club designed for students with an interest in agricultural communications and provides them an opportunity to interact with others with similar professional interests at the university level.

6. Honors Day Banquet - April 17
The Bumpers College Honors Day Banquet is set for Thursday, April 17, starting at 6 p.m., in the Arkansas Union's Alltel Ballroom. Dean Greg Weidemann, Associate Dean Donna Graham and a representative of the Bumpers College Alumni Society will present faculty and student awards recognizing academic achievement.

7. Field Days at Batesville and Monticello - April 15 & 24
A Division of Agriculture field day on forage crops in the morning and forestry in the afternoon is set for April 15 at the Livestock and Forestry Branch Station near Batesville. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the field day will adjourn at 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Details at http://batesvillestation.org/.
Beef and forage research will be featured in an April 24 field day at the Southeast Research and Extension Center at Monticello.

8. Water Resources Research Conference - April 22-23
The Arkansas Water Resources Center Annual Research Conference will be April 22 and 23, featuring sessions on nutrient loads and water quality in Arkansas streams, aquatic conservation through the State Wildlife Grants Program, and research presentations by new water science faculty.
