Archie Flanders has joined the Division of Agriculture faculty as an assistant professor of agricultural economics and agribusiness and holder of the Harold F. Ohlendorf Professorship at the Northeast Research and Extension Center in Keiser.
Formerly with the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development at the University of Georgia, Flanders is focusing on production economics and farm management issues involving row crops in eastern Arkansas. In Georgia, he focused on applying input-output models to quantify the importance of agriculture to economic development. He also has experience as a statistical analyst with the National Agricultural Statistics Service
Flanders will conduct research and extension projects involving enterprise selection; integration of financial, marketing and production tactics into risk management strategy; and farm management decision aids. Applications include economic analysis of research data. He has a Ph. D. from the University of Georgia.

2. Morris inducted into Agriculture Hall of Fame

Distinguished Professor of Food Science Justin Morris, director of the Division of Agriculture's Institute of Food Science and Engineering, was inducted into the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame March 13 at the annual induction luncheon at Little Rock's Embassy Suites Hotel.
He is internationally known for his research and extension work in enology and viticulture. He also has served many years as executive vice president of the Ozark Food Processors Association representing 90 food processing companies and suppliers in 35 states.
Morris helped develop and has served as director since 1995 of the IFSE, which assists the food industry in accessing university research and extension expertise for interdisciplinary projects to address specific industry issues.
Morris is a leading authority in the world on complete vineyard mechanization without loss of quality. His research and collaboration with grape grower Tommy Oldridge of Lowell led to development of the patented Morris-Oldridge Vineyard Mechanization System in 2002.

3. Riparian Forest Buffers workshop Monday
A workshop on "Riparian Forest Buffers -- Providing Farm-Level Economic and Environmental Benefits" is set for Monday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Arena and the Watershed Research and Education Center. It will provide information on establishment methods, costs and cost share assistance, as well as economic, environmental, and multiple use benefits of RFBs. The workshop will be conducted by the Arkansas Water Resources Center of the Division of Agriculture and is sponsored by the Arkansas Farm Bureau.

5. GSD awards and initiation ceremony March 24
Gamma Sigma Delta will hold its annual awards and initiate recognition ceremony from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at the AFLS Building Hembree Auditorium. This is the second consecutive year that the chapter has hosted an afternoon event instead of the evening banquet that was held in previous years. A reception will follow in the AFLS Building atrium.
The awards ceremony will recognize winners of the GSD teaching, research and extension awards, student research competition winners and scholarship recipients. Three 10-minute presentations will be made by participants of the oral presentation contest.

6. HESC 'Cooking for Good Health' demonstrations begin Tuesday
Human Resources is partnering with the School of Human and Environmental Sciences to provide a series of nutrition education sessions to the campus community. Students in the dietetics program, under the direction of associate professor Marjorie Fitch-Hilgenberg, will make presentations covering healthy food choices and lifestyle behaviors that may prevent or manage specific health conditions. These presentations are class projects for the students and are open to all faculty and staff. A $5 contribution per session to offset expenses will be appreciated.
Each presentation will begin at 4 p.m. and will last approximately one hour. Participants will be invited to sample the food items prepared as part of the demonstrations. All presentations will be held in the Home Economics building, room 109. Seating is limited so advance registration is required. 7. U.S. House Committee on Agriculture economist is Future Forum speaker - Thursday

Craig Jagger, chief economist for the House Committee on Agriculture since 2001, will be the speaker at a Future Focus seminar on Thursday, March 26, at 3:30 p.m. in Plant Sciences 009. The seminars are sponsored by the department of agricultural economics and agribusiness.
Jagger has worked for Republican chairmen Larry Combest and Bob Goodlatte and now works for Democratic chairman Collin Peterson. In his 23 years in Washington, he also has worked for the Congressional Budget Office, USDA's Farm Service Agency, the Governmental Accountability Office, and USDA's Economic Research Service. Among the major legislation he has helped develop are four farm bills, four budget reconciliation bills, two crop insurance bills and numerous disaster assistance bills.
Jagger was raised on a farm near Minneapolis, Kan., that his great-grandparents homesteaded 143 years ago. "Jagger" wheat, the most widely planted wheat variety in Kansas from 1998 through 2005, is named after his late father. He started his formal education at a two-room country school (without indoor plumbing) a mile and a half from the farm.
Jagger has a bachelor's degree in technical theatre and a master's degree in agricultural economics from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Cornell University. His wife, Joy Harwood, is the chief economist and director of economic and policy analysis at USDA's Farm Service Agency. For eight years, they co-taught a popular evening class on commodity programs at the USDA Graduate School.

8. Extension district directors to interview graduating students - April 15
District directors with the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service will be on the Fayetteville campus to interview graduating seniors and grad students for positions with the Extension Service April 15 in the AEED conference room. Sign up for a 30 minute interview in AGRI 205 or by calling Susan Dorough at 575-2035. Interview times will be on a first-come, first-served basis. They will be interviewing for a range of Extension Service positions.

9. Student clubs host lawn mower tune-up March 27-28
The Agricultural Mechanization Club and the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow will provide a lawn mower tune-up clinic March 27-28, at the Abernathy Agriscience Building at the Arkansas Agricultural Research and Extension Center (1194 W. Cassatt) off Garland Avenue, approximately two miles north of the U of A campus. Bring mowers on Friday, March 27 between 2 and 6 p.m. Pick-up will be the following day, Saturday, March 28 by 5 p.m. Customers will be notified by phone when their mower is ready for pick-up. The cost is $25 per mower plus parts; the average cost is $32. Tune-up includes: changing spark plugs, filter and oil, and sharpening and balancing mower blade. Only push mowers in working order will be accepted.
"This has been one of our largest, successful fundraising events in the past," said Dru Glaze, ACT club president. "We enjoy helping our community prepare for spring as they provide experience for both clubs." The money raised at the event will be used to support club travel and registration fees to regional and national competitions and events.

10. Water Resources Conference registration deadline is April 3
The 2009 Arkansas Water Resources Center Research and Watershed Conference is set for April 14-15, at the University of Arkansas Global Campus, 2 East Center Street. Registration deadline is April 3. Registration fees include breakfast, lunch and a social on Tuesday, and breakfast and an optional Riparian Buffer Field Trip on Wednesday. For more information or to register contact awrc@uark.edu.

11. OFPA Convention focuses on food safety - April 7-8
The Ozark Food Processors Association 103rd annual convention on Food Safety will be held April 7-8 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, Springdale, AR. The pre-registration deadline has been extended to March 31.
The convention begins on April 7 with an industry exposition of products, services and equipment from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Finalists in the Food and Beverage Innovations Contest for UA students will show their entries during the exposition. Winners of the contest and winners of OFPA student scholarships will be announced during a wine reception and dinner beginning at 6 p.m. The technical presentations begin on April 8 with speakers discussing issues on Food Safety. 12. Apparel studies and Anne Kittrell Gallery host fashion exhibit
The apparel studies program in the School of Human Environmental Sciences and the Anne Kittrell Gallery, Arkansas Union, are hosting an exhibit of clothing designed by University of Arkansas students. All students are invited to submit designs for an exhibit that will begin April 20. Completed garments are due April 10.
