1. Teaching Academy Inducts Mary Savin. The University of Arkansas Teaching Academy inducted Associate Professor Mary Savin, CSES, as one of six new members at its annual banquet at Ella's Restaurant Nov. 2. The John and Lois Imhoff Award of Outstanding Teaching and Student Mentorship was presented to Timothy Kral, associate professor of Biological Sciences.
Dr. Savin grew up in Massachusetts and earned her doctoral degree in biological sciences at the University of Rhode Island. She joined the faculty of Bumpers College in 2002. In addition to her teaching duties, she served as advisor to the Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Club, and has been faculty advisor for several undergraduate research projects. Her research program includes the study of microbial and microfaunal community dynamics in soil environments.
Others inducted were Lorraine Brewer, instructor of Chemistry and Biochemistry; C. Richard Cassady, associate professor of Industrial Engineering, Norman Dennis, professor of Civil Engineering, Gary Ferrier, professor of Economics, and Janine Parry, associate professor of Political Science.
2. How to Eat and Greet Neat -- Today. Free food for students during a workshop on networking with potential employers. Students will learn about juggling a plate of food, a handshake, and a sharp introduction of themselves at a networking/conference event. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served. No cost to attend. Business casual attire is expected. All majors are invited. The workshop is titled: Networking - What it is & When, Why & How it Can Impact Your Career, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 5 - 7 p.m. Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House at the corner of Maple and Razorback Rd. Facilitator: Helena Gadison, Founder and CEO of EMW Enterprises, Inc. and former Vice President of Wal-Mart International Apparel. 3. Health Insurance Primer -- Thursday. The Pat Walker Health Center will present a one-hour program, "In-Sure Insurance," to inform students and others about the purposes of health insurance and how to shop for the right coverage. Free pizza. Thursday Nov. 9, at 5:00 p.m., Arkansas Union 312NW.
4. Chicken sale -- Friday. The Poultry Science Graduate Association is hosting a chicken sale Friday, Nov. 10, at the Pilot Processing Plant, 1491 Knapp. All prices are below market prices and are as follows: $1.50 4 Leg quarters; $2.50 Whole bird; $1.50 8 Wings; $2.00 lb Chicken Breast. From campus take Garland towards 540, turn left on Knapp Street at the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Arena and follow the arrows.
