| FOODS LAB -- Pictured in the renovated Donald "Buddy" and Linda Wray Foods Lab in the Home Economics Building are FHNH faculty members Robert Harrington, Marjorie Fitch-Hilgenberg, and Allen Powell. |
The Donald "Buddy" and Linda Wray Foods Laboratory in the School of Human Environmental Sciences was dedicated during the HESC Homecoming Breakfast Saturday, Nov. 1.
A gift from the Wrays made possible renovation of the laboratory, which is used by students in the foods, human nutrition and hospitality major and the food science major. The renovation included installation of vent hoods, the lack of which has caused excessive heat during lab periods when several or all ranges were in use. New flooring and other equipment were also provided. Ranges are provided and periodically updated, at no charge, by Arkansas Western Gas.

| CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER -- Vernoice Baldwin, coordinator of the HESC's Infant Development Center and Preschool, and Wanda Stephens, who led efforts to provide childcare services through the college's child development program in the 1950s, show a drawing of the proposed Child Development Research Center. |
HESC Director Mary Warnock announced that a development campaign is underway for a Child Development Research Center, which would include childcare services for the campus community. She said architectural plans by Miller, Boskus, Lack have been developed, and a possible site is being discussed. The development campaign goal is $5 million for construction and another $5 million for an endowment to help fund operations, she said.
Framed watercolor prints of the Home Economics Building by Judy Howard, AGCS, are being sold for $125 to raise funds for HESC scholarships, Warnock said. The prints are framed identically to watercolor prints by Howard of the Agriculture Building, so that they can be displayed as a set. To purchase a print of the Home Economics Building, contact the HESC department office at 479-575-4307. To purchase a print of the Agriculture Building, contact the Bumpers College dean's office at 575-2034.

2. Live from Italy, Curt Rom appearing in 'Intro to Global Studies' - Tuesday
Students in Tuesday's (Nov. 4) "Introduction to Global Studies" class will participate in a live interactive lecture session from Italy with Horticulture Professor Curt Rom.
Rom is on a Senior Fulbright Fellowship to teach and study at the Agripolis of Padua University in Italy. He is teaching a course in sustainable and organic agriculture and community food systems and participating in research on nutrient cycling in sustainable systems with emphasis on high-tunnel, off-season production.
Professor Mary Warnock, the global studies class instructor, said seats are available for the class in AGRI 332 from 2:00 to 3:20 p.m., and visitors are welcome.
Students will be able to converse with Rom during the real-time transatlantic video session using Skype freeware and the audio/video equipment available in the classroom.
Brenda Wideman, Division of Agriculture technology coordinator, says the same method has been used for several classes and video conferences, and Rom and others use Skype to converse with students. However, performance using Skype freeware can be limited by bandwidth availability. Performance will deteriorate as more people use it on the UA network. The addition of IP (Internet protocol) equipment in selected rooms would provide more reliable use of available bandwidth for distance video sessions via the Internet.
