1. Tyson Endows Chair and Professorships. Tyson Foods, Inc., has endowed a new faculty chair and two professorships in Bumpers College and the Division of Agriculture. Dean Greg Weidemann said current faculty members who are nationally recognized in their fields were named to the positions. They are Billy Hargis, Sustainable Poultry Health Chair; Gisela Erf, Avian Immunology Professorship; and Jean-Francois Meullenet, Food Sensory Science Professorship. Investment returns from endowments of $1.5 million for the chair and $500,000 for each professorship will be used for the teaching and research programs of each faculty member. 2. Moldenhauer Named AAAS Fellow. The American Association for the Advancement of Science has awarded the distinction of AAAS Fellow to University of Arkansas rice breeder Karen Kuenzel Moldenhauer. Moldenhauer, who holds the university's Rice Industry Chair for Variety Development, is based at the Rice Research and Extension Center (RREC) near Stuttgart, which is a unit of the U of A System's Division of Agriculture. The rice breeding program has developed 19 improved varieties since 1982, when Moldenhauer, also a professor in the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences at UA, Fayetteville, joined the faculty as leader of the program. 3. Free 'Food and Health' EU Graduate Course. There is an opportunity for three University of Arkansas graduate students to participate in a free 2-week graduate course entitled "Food and Health," February 18 - March 3, 2007, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. All living expenses and teaching materials will be paid by the course organizers. Students will have to pay for round-trip travel to Romania. The course is funded by the European Union commission and organized by the University of Gent, Belgium. 4. Apple Butter Sale. The Food Science Club is selling apple butter made by students, faculty and staff -- $3 per jar or a case of 12 for $30 -- at the Food Science Department office, 2650 N. Young Ave.
5. Santa's Sack Drive. The Bumpers College Ambassadors are sponsoring a college-wide Santa's Sack Drive to benefit the Peace at Home Shelter. Items to be donated include new children's holiday gifts and new gifts for the children to give to their mothers. They include, but are not limited to: toys, movies, CDs, lotion, perfume, clothing, gloves, hats, scarves or anything you would give a child or your mother for the holidays. The drive will be from Nov. 20- Dec. 1. The department with the most items will receive a pizza party. Boxes will be placed at each department for donation collection.
