| Paula Agudelo |
The Plant Pathology Centennial Seminar Series will continue on Friday, Nov. 6, with a presentation by alumnus Paula Agudelo on Identity and Identification of Plant Pathogens.
After receiving a Ph.D. degree in plant sciences from the University of Arkansas, Agudelo joined the department of entomology, soils and plant sciences at Clemson University where she is an is an assistant professor. She uses molecular biology tools in studies involving nematode species of economic importance. She says she is particularly interested in research problems concerning reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) and root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.). Her applied research interests include the study of intraspecific variation, the impact of variants on breeding for plant resistance strategies, and the use of new technologies for the development of species identification methods. Basic research interests are phylogenetic analysis of population and species evolutionary processes, the integration of classical taxonomy with molecular systematics, and nematode reference collections.
The department was established in 1909 and is one of the oldest standing department of plant pathology in a university in the United States, according to University Professor David TeBeest, who is coordinating the centennial activities with Department Head Rick Bennett and Assistant Professor Y. Tzanetakis.
