1. Dow AgroSciences recruiters to interview students - Wednesday & Thursday

Recruiters from a major agribusiness employer, Dow AgroSciences, will be interviewing Bumpers College students on campus this week for full-time jobs and internships.

An information session will be held Wednesday evening, Oct. 22, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the AFLS Building, B-108. Interviews will be Thursday, Oct. 23, at the UA Career Center, Arkansas Union 607.

2. Undergraduate research grant applications deadline - Thursday

Faculty members and students are encouraged to take advantage of undergraduate research grant opportunities. Information about undergraduate research grants and application guidelines are available on the Bumpers College Web site under Current Students /Undergraduate Research. Three types of grants are available:

1. AFLS Undergraduate Research Funding (all students in AFLS College may apply)

2. SURF (all UA students may apply) 

3. Honors College Undergraduate Research Grants (all Honors students who meet SURF guidelines may apply)

AFLS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FUNDING: Twenty (20) projects ranging from $500 to $1,000 will be selected this year. The student does not have to be in the honors program to apply for these funds but must have at least a 3.00 GPA.

To be considered for an undergraduate research project, you must submit a brief proposal of no more than 5 double spaced pages describing the proposed research. The proposal must include the following components:  

- rationale for the proposed research
- research methods to be used
- description of budget needs
- proposed avenue for publishing research findings
- a one page resume of the mentor and student.

This proposal should be submitted to the Associate Dean's office (AFLS E108) by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2008. Paper or electronic copies are accepted. Please send your electronic files to calessi@uark.edu.

STUDENT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS (SURF): The Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) sponsors SURF funding for Arkansas students to encourage in-depth research projects in the student's specific field of study.

To be eligible, students must:

- have completed at least 30 hours or more of credit toward their degree at time of funding,
- have earned at least a 3.25 GPA,
- be US citizens or permanent resident aliens,
- be working on a thesis or other research project

Students do not have to be members of the Honors College to compete for SURF grants.

NOTE: A letter of financial support from the Dean's office (AFLS E108) must be submitted along with the SURF proposal. All students who wish to submit this grant must come by the Dean's office for a signature and the letter. It is best for students to not wait until the last minute for the signatures.

SURF and Honors College Undergraduate Research Grants are due in the Honors College Office (ADMN 418) by 4:00 p.m. on the following days:

Arts, Architecture, and Humanities: Wednesday, October 22, 2008
AFLS, WCOB, Education, Social Sciences: Thursday, October 23, 2008
Science and Engineering: Monday, October 20, 2008

HONORS COLLEGE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH GRANTS: All students who are in the Honors College may also submit a proposal for Undergraduate Research Grants. International honors students are eligible for the Honors College Undergraduate Research Grant.

Proposals for the Honors College Undergraduate Research Grants should be submitted by 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2008, in Admin 418.

3. Interior design students host 'Slow Home Movement' founder - Nov. 5

The Interior Design Organization (IDO) in the School of Human Environmental Sciences, will host John Brown of Calgary University, founder of the "Slow Home Movement," on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. in Hembree Auditorium in the AFLS Building.

John Brown is editor of theslowhome.com and founder of the Slow Home Movement. He is a registered architect, real estate broker and professor of architecture at the University of Calgary. His ideas have gained national attention and have been featured in the New York Times, the Associated Press, TreeHugger.com, Wall Street Journal and the Huffington Post.

4. Academic Enhancement Program workshops - Wednesday

Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) workshops are scheduled for October and November. Workshops are conducted by AEP Coordinator John Kelly in HOEC 106 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 p.m.

5. Entomology hosts lecturer on 'moth invasion' - Friday

Joe Elkinton from the University of Massachusetts will present "A new winter moth invasion of eastern North America" at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in AGRI 332. The department of entomology is sponsoring this special guest lecture. Everyone in the community is invited.

6. Sigma Xi speaker: Phosphorous, the $50 million element - Friday

University of Arkansas Chapter of Sigma Xi will host a talk by Tommy Daniel, professor of crop, soil and environmental sciences, on "Phosphorus, eutrophication and the $50 million element," at noon Friday, Oct. 24, in Arkansas Union Room 308 SW. All are welcome to attend. Please note that this talk will begin at 12:00 noon rather than the usual time of 12:30 p.m.

7. Division co-sponsors water conference - Nov. 7

The Division of Agriculture's Public Policy Center and the UALR Bowen School of Law will present a biennial water conference Nov. 7 at the 4-H Center in Ferndale.

"H2Overdrawn: A Forum on Water Policy, Law, Science and Technology" will feature a keynote address by Robert Abrams, a professor at Florida A&M University College of Law and one of the nation's leading water law experts.

The one-day event will explore the water challenges facing Arkansas and how the state is addressing water quantity and quality issues through a combination of policy, law, science and technology.

Presenters will discuss a broad array of topics such as alternative practices for source water protection, advances in water quality analysis, successfully establishing an irrigation district and the effect of recent court rulings on wetlands jurisdictions.

8. Ag Bowl registration underway

Registration is underway for the Ag Bowl event sponsored by Sigma Alpha, the professional agricultural sorority for women.

Teams of five members each can pre-register for $30 by Oct. 31 or $40 after that date. The tournament will be Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Ozark Lanes. Prizes will be given to winning teams and individuals based on scores after one round of bowling.

Ag Bowl T-shirts (baseball style), for $17 each, must be ordered and paid for by Oct. 31. Turn in registration form and payment in AGRI 201. For more information call 754-1559 or e-mail sigalpha@uark.edu.

9. Club sponsors pumpkin carving contest - Oct. 30

The CSES Graduate Students Association is sponsoring a pumpkin carving contest on Oct. 30th in front of the Altheimer Lab on North Garland Ave. Bring your pumpkins and carving supplies at 4:30 p.m. and enjoy snacks and refreshments while you carve, or bring your finished pumpkin to be judged at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited.

11. Prospective students invited to Bumpers College Career Day

Prospective students and their parents and teachers are invited to Bumpers College Career Day on Friday, Nov. 14. Those who attend will have sessions with instrutors and advisors and will learn about financial aid and scholarships, student life and housing. Activities will include a campus tour and visits with current students and alumni.

Those planning to attend are asked to register by Nov. 10. A registration form and details are on the Bumpers College Web site.
