1. Undergraduate research grants available
Faculty member and students are encouraged to take advantage of undergraduate research grant opportunities. Information about undergraduate research grants and application forms are available on the Bumpers College Web site under Current Students / Undergraduate Research. Three types of grants are available:
1. AFLS Undergraduate Research Funding (all students in AFLS College may apply)
2. SURF (all UA students may apply)
3. Honors College Undergraduate Research Grants (all Honors students who meet SURF guidelines may apply)
AFLS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FUNDING: Twenty (20) projects ranging from $500 to $1,000 will be selected this year. The student does not have to be in the honors program to apply for these funds but must have at least a 3.00 GPA.

This proposal should be submitted to the Associate Dean's office (AFLS E108) by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2008. Paper or electronic copies are accepted. Please send your electronic files to calessi@uark.edu.
STUDENT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS (SURF): The Arkansas Department of Higher Education (ADHE) sponsors SURF funding for Arkansas students to encourage in-depth research projects in the student's specific field of study.
To be eligible, students must:
- have completed at least 30 hours or more of credit toward their degree at time of funding,
- have earned at least a 3.25 GPA,
- be US citizens or permanent resident aliens,
- be working on a thesis or other research project
Students do not have to be members of the Honors College to compete for SURF grants.

NOTE: A letter of financial support from the Dean's office (AFLS E108) must be submitted along with the SURF proposal. All students who wish to submit this grant must come by the Dean's office for a signature and the letter. It is best for students to not wait until the last minute for the signatures.
SURF and Honors College Undergraduate Research Grants are due in the Honors College Office (ADMN 418) by 4:00 p.m. on the following days:

HONORS COLLEGE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH GRANTS: All students who are in the Honors College may also submit a proposal for Undergraduate Research Grants. International honors students are eligible for the Honors College Undergraduate Research Grant.
Proposals for the Honors College Undergraduate Research Grants should be submitted by 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2008, in Admin 418.

2. Forestry association names Pelkki 'Communicator of the Year' - Photo
The Arkansas Forestry Association has named Matt Pelkki 2008 Communicator of the Year. Pelkki is professor of forestry with the Division of Agriculture's Arkansas Forest Resource Center at the University of Arkansas, Monticello. He holds a joint appointment with the School of Forest Resources at UAM. The award was presented Oct. 8 at the AFA annual meeting in Fort Smith.
A member of the UAM faculty since 2001, Pelkki holds the George H. Clippert Endowed Chair of the UAM forestry program. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment and a master's and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences.

3. Bluhm honored for 'Molecular Plant Pathology' article
Molecular Plant Pathology, an international journal published in association with the British Society of Plant Pathology, recently awarded its Best Student Paper Prize to Burt Bluhm, assistant professor of plant pathology. Bluhm joined the Arkansas faculty in March 2008 and authored the winning paper as a Ph.D. candidate at Purdue Univeristy.
The winning paper, "Involvement of ZFR1 of Fusarium verticillioides in kernel colonization and the regulation of FST1, a putative sugar transporter gene required for fumonisin biosynthesis on maize kernels," was selected from 14 finalists.
Bluhm, whose research specialty is host-plant resistance pathology, will receive a monetary prize, complimentary membership to the BSPP for two years, and an opportunity to attend the Society's annual Presidential conference in London, UK in December.

4. CSES doctoral candidates honored for research
Four CSES students received awards in June at the 5th International Weed Science Congress in Vancouver, Canada.
Marites Sales, a CEMB/CSES Ph.D. student received the highest honor, and first ever, Larry Burrill Award for her work on the transcriptome analysis of weedy red rice in response to nitrogen stress. She received a plaque and a $2,000 travel grant to present a paper at the congress.
Sanjeev Bangarwa and Vinod Shivrain, Ph.D. students in weed science, received certificates and $1,000 travel grants to present their research on methyl bromide alternatives and factors affecting gene flow in the rice-weedy rice agroecology.
Fabiane Lamego, a Ph.D. student from Brazil, also received a $1,000 travel grant and certificate for her work on the physiological and molecular basis for resistance of Bidens subalternans to ALS inhibitor herbicides.

5. World Food Day: Choices for a Hungry Planet - Thursday
The University of Arkansas will host the 2008 World Food Day Teleconference from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in the First Security Auditorium at Willard J. Walker Hall. The theme of this year's conference is "Choices for a Warm and Hungry Planet." Participants will explore the impacts of climate change on food supplies and the impending food crises that could threaten global peace and security. 6. Academic Enhancement Program workshops
Academic Enhancement Program (AEP) workshops are scheduled for October and November. Workshops are conducted by AEP Coordinator John Kelly in HOEC 106 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 p.m.

7. Ag Bowl registration underway
Registration is underway for the Ag Bowl event sponsored by Sigma Alpha, the professional agricultural sorority for women.
Teams of five members each can pre-register for $30 by Oct. 31 or $40 after that date. The tournament will be Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Ozark Lanes. Prizes will be given to winning teams and individuals based on scores after one round of bowling.
Ag Bowl T-shirts (baseball style), for $17 each, must be ordered and paid for by Oct. 31. Turn in registration form and payment in AGRI 201. For more information call 754-1559 or e-mail sigalpha@uark.edu.

10. Events to address freshman, sophomore issues - Wednesday
The UA Career Development Center is sponsoring the following events, which are especially for first and second year students. Both events will be in the Multicultural Center, ARKU 4th floor. More information at http://career.uark.edu/.
