1. Awards Luncheon Precursor to Division Conference

Agricultural Experiment Station and Cooperative Extension Service faculty and staff from throughout the statewide Division of Agriculture gathered for the presentation of faculty and staff awards Friday, Jan. 18, during a luncheon at the Springdale Holiday Inn conference center.

Vice President for Agriculture Milo Shult said the event was a precursor to a statewide Division of Agriculture conference being planned for Jan. 6-8 in 2009 at the Embassy Suites conference center in Rogers. The planning committee is headed by Steven Ricke, FDSC, and Mary Savin, CSES.

2. Seven Students Receive SURF Grants

Seven Bumpers College students have been awarded the State Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) to help fund undergraduate research projects with a faculty mentor. SURF grants were awarded by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education to the following students and projects.

Emily Howland of Tulsa. $2,650. Prolactin polymorphisms relating to mastitis. Mentor: Rick Rorie. Animal Science.

Keshia Koehn of Fayetteville. $2,650. Investigation of antecedent moisture content effects on storm-water runoff using a combined Geographic Information System (GIS) and curve number Approach. Mentor: Kristofor Brye. Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences.

Rebecca Logsdon of Springdale. $2,650. Development of a distributed artificial neural network model for hydrologic modeling. Mentor: Sreekala Bajwa. Biological and Agricultural Engineering.

Kathryn Murphy of North Little Rock. $2,025. Identification of polymorphisms in the regulatory region of  the bovine cytochrome P450 (CYP3A28) gene. Mentor: Charles Rosenkrans. Animal Science.

Brittany Peyrot of Kingston. $2,650. The role of care-giving in the physical and mental well-being of older adults: A cross-cultural perspective. Mentor: M. Jean Turner. Human Environmental Sciences.

Laura Sossamon of Ozark. $2,025. A comparison of environmental behavior, attitudes and concerns between farmers from Arkansas and Belgium. Mentor: Eric Wailes. Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness.

Jordan Steinhaus of Hot Springs. $2,025. Effects of E-10 and E-85 ethanol fuels on the performance, efficiency and emissions of a 3.6 kW spark-ignition engine. Mentor: Donald M. Johnson. Agricultural and Extension Education.

3. Martin Redfern Retirement Reception -- Jan. 30

All faculty and staff members and interested students are invited to a retirement reception for Professor Martin Redfern, AEAB, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 3:30 - 5 p.m., with a presentation at 4 p.m., at the University House on Maple Ave.

4. Time Management and Study Skills Workshop -- Thursday

Bumpers College students are invited to an Academic Enhancement Program workshop on "Time Management and Study Skills" on Thursday, Jan. 24, in HOEC 106, 12:30 - 1:20 p.m.  The workshop will include warning signs of stress, how to deal with procrastination, effective planning and short term time management techniques.
