Curriculum Meeting Minutes
November 3, 2006
Voting Faculty Present: Laurie Apple, Lorna Harding, Marjorie Fitch-Hilgenberg, Tim Killian, Kelly Way, Peggy Whan
Others Present: Alice Griffin
Meeting was called to order by chair, Tim Killian at 1:35 p.m.
1) Approval of Minutes
Minutes from the October 6, 2006 meeting were presented for approval. Kelly Way moved that the minutes be approved as written. Laurie Apple seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous to approve the minutes.
2) Old Business
a) Interior Design Minor
This item was tabled at this time.
b) Apparel Studies – HESC 2023 – Second Reading
This proposal is to change the title of HESC 2023 to "Visual Merchandising and Fashion Promotion". The committee request from the first reading was that the class schedule should be broadened and the grading scale be detailed. These changes have been addressed. The course already exists; this is just a request to change the name and description.
Tim Killian asked if this would require a program change. Alice Griffin was going to verify whether or not this would require a program change.
Dr. Whan noted that the textbook date is 1999 – this is an "old" book, by student standards. Laurie Apple explained that there is a new edition coming out in 2007.
Marjorie Fitch-Hilgenberg moved to accept the proposal and 2nd reading. Peggy Whan seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous to approve the motion.
3) New Business
a) FHNH Curriculum Changes
1) One Major Change – HESC 4613
It is necessary to lower the course level to make this class a pre-requisite. Peggy Whan questioned the numbering that was used for the classes because the pre-requisite (HESC 3643) is higher than the class that it is a pre-requisite for (HESC 3604). Dr. Whan stated that this could be perceived as an issue by the students. After discussion about the numbering rationale, Marjorie Fitch-Hilgenberg stated that she would go back to HESC 3603 as the pre-requisite for HESC 3604. Alice Griffin was to check if there is a program change necessary for the major change noted in 3a1.
2) Two Minor Changes
a) It is being requested that "And consent" be dropped and that HESC 3603 be added as a pre-requisite for HESC 3604.
b) The request is for HESC 3604 to be moved to a pre- or co- requisite for HESC 4623. This should simplify the override process. Alice Griffin asked how these changes will affect the 8 semester plan. It was noted that the catalog copy will have to be updated when the time comes (January 2007). The degree plan will also need to be updated.
Marjorie Fitch-Hilgenberg moved that the major and minor changes be accepted and that the motion would apply to a first and second reading. Laurie Apple seconded the motion. The motion was approved by all present.
b) Alice Griffin – HESC 1114H
Alice stated that this class has been moved to Social Sciences and stated that everyone needs to be sensitive to the moving of classes to other disciplines when advising students. Alice also pointed out that any changes to the 07-08 catalog must be approved by December 2006.
4) Tabled Items
a) HESC 1501 Orientation
It was decided that this item would be left tabled at this time.
With no further business to discuss, Tim Killian moved that the meeting be adjourned. Laurie Apple seconded the motion. All were in favor. Meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m.
