Old Business:
1. Course Changes
a. FDSC6023 Metabolism of Xenobiotics
Potential overlap with POSC5103 Toxicology and Contaminants-Dan Donoghue, POSC, and Sun-Ok Lee, FDSC, discussed with committee. Donoghue sees overlap in first 8 weeks of both courses; no pre-reqs for Donoghue; target audience is online MS in AFLS; POSC target audience is not affected by FDSC course; higher fee structure to enroll in online POSC course. Lee feels emphasis is on human nutrition; CHEM 3813 is only pre-req for FDSC course.
Questions from committee: How much overlap between courses is too much?
Has course been created to fill need that does not exist?
No FDSC students have taken the POSC course in the past. Why have FDSC students not taken the POSC course? Unknown. FDSC sees fit in POSC course for food safety students.
Why is POSC not cross-listed?
POSC has been offered for 8-9 years, but offered every 3 years; FDSC has been taught as Special Topics.
Miller motions to accept course (second reading). There is an understanding that 2 departments will work together to eliminate overlap (make sure that serving different audiences); department heads have made this agreement; nothing has happened; FDSC will offer in fall as Special Topics this fall regardless of decision today. Motion to table by Gbur. Rainey seconded. Motion to table carried. Consider (highly recommend) including HESC (NUTR) in the discussion.
