Advising - Students
Bumpers College is committed to a strong, effective academic advising program. Advising policies are developed by the faculty with the assistance of the Dean, the Associate Dean for Academics and the Coordinator of Advising and Retention, whose offices are in the AFLS Building.
Your faculty adviser/mentor will help you develop and implement your educational plans. The advising relationship is a partnership between the student and the faculty adviser. It depends on effective communication and regular contact. Use these tips to get the most out of your advising experience.
-- Maintain contact with your adviser. See your adviser more than just once a semester. Let your adviser know how you are throughout the semester. If you do not know who your adviser is, contact the AFLS Dean’s Office, 575-2252.
-- Take an active role. Share your concerns and confusions about any matter with your adviser. Don’t be shy; they want to hear from you. Please don’t rely on second hand knowledge from your friends; go directly to your adviser.
-- Make proper arrangements to see your adviser. Make the best effort to make an appointment instead of just dropping in. This way your adviser will be there when you need him or her.
-- Come prepared. Bring your paperwork and write down your questions and concerns.
-- Keep track of your coursework. We encourage you to maintain an updated degree check sheet with your adviser each semester. Senior degree checks for graduation will be conducted in the Dean’s Office after the completion of 85 credit hours. Use your Degree Completion Plan and your personal “Plan of Study” in your Student Planner to help keep track of your courses .
-- Be open. Tell your adviser about your needs, desires and habits — good and bad. Don’t hesitate to discuss your desire to change majors.
-- If the relationship is not working, consult your department head or the Bumpers College Coordinator of Advising and Retention.
