What are my options for a career working with food?

Our Food Science major leads primarily to careers in the food production and processing industries.

The Foods, Nutrition and Hospitality major in the School of Human Environmental Sciences provides several career paths related to food, nutrition and the hospitality industry.



Concentrations in the Food Science major are:

The Food Science major includes an optional concentration of Food Technology, which requires less science and adds business courses to prepare students for management careers. The basic Food Science concentration focuses on the chemistry and the processing and analysis techniques vital to food processing companies.

Pre-medical, Pre-Pharmacy and Pre-Dental students can major in Food Science.

Food Scientists may work in a university, in industry or for government agencies. About 60% of food scientists work in the "research and development / scientific / technical" area, according to an industry survey.

Three Concentrations in the Foods, Nutrition and Hospitality major will prepare you for careers in the food and hospitality industries or as a Registered Dietitian or nutrition expert in health care, business or education.

1. The Dietetics concentration prepares students for food industry careers and for an internship and exam to become a Registered Dietitian (RD) in the health care industry.

2. The General Food and Nutrition concentration allows for elective hours to combine food and nutrition study with other areas such as exercise science, journalism, business or physical and biological sciences.

3. The Hospitality and Restaurant Management concentration prepares you for managerial positions in the hospitality, restaurant, resort and tourism industries. You’ll learn business skills in marketing, economics, accounting and business management and receive technical training in foods, hospitality, restaurant and hotel management, and tourism management.

The historic Inn at Carnall Hall on the University of Arkansas campus serves as a learning laboratory for the HRMN concentration. Students take most courses at the Inn and work with the Chef-in-Residence and other hotel and restaurant staff member.
