Nathan Waldrip
Agricultural Business

Nathan chose to attend the U of A because...
"...after visiting and talking with some professors and students, I knew the U of A would adequately prepare me for a successful career. I can honestly say the U of A has surpassed my expectations in virtually every aspect.

"Bumpers College is among the elite agricultural colleges in the nation. There are many components that allow Bumpers College to excel, and the affable professors are definitely an integral component to that success."

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:
"It is okay to have fun, but you're here primarily to get an education, so go to class and learn as much as you can."

Chase Hilton
Chase Hilton
Agricultural Education, Communication
and Technology

Chase choose the U of A because "Arkansas is my home."
He believes he made a good decision.

"I love the small classes and honorable, dependable teachers I have. They haven't only taught me how to do my job, but more importantly, they have given me the life skills needed to be a success in the educational system.

"I enjoy the many career opportunities I have with this major. I can go into teaching, sales, banking and many other industries because employers recognize that agriculture majors are problem solvers."

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:
"Live life how you want to and never let anyone steer you off your course you have envisioned for yourself and your family."

Marlow Ball
Marlow Ball
Animal Science

"When I was looking at schools, one of the things that I liked about the University of Arkansas is that it was such a large school. But the animal science department is such a small and personal department and has really helped to motivate and drive me through my undergraduate years.

"The personal interactions that you have with professors are ESSENTIAL to performing well as an undergrad, which is necessary for any pre-professional degree. I would highly recommend our department to anyone pursuing a pre-professional career.

"The animal science department at the U of A prepared me for admission into veterinary school, a very competitive program. Vet schools value students with diverse experience. I had very little large animal experience and the animal science major really helped to strengthen my knowledge in that area."

David Rainwater

Biological Engineering

"I always wanted to be a Razorback and I love Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas. The U of A is a good path in preparation for dental school, and, at the same time, it provides a good alternative to dental school.

"I enjoy the hands-on projects that we do in my Biological Engineering courses. Solving problems that are tangible and resemble real-world problems are fun to think about and analyze."

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:
"Work hard to enjoy college, both learning and leisure. Know that there will be bad days and good ones, but these four years only last a short time and are some of the best years in life."

Tim Rainey
Tim Rainey
Crop Management

"Coming from a farm background, I was really interested in crop management and thought the classes looked interesting. Plus, the U of A and the agriculture college have a good reputation.

"Scholarships really helped me with my financial needs. They also provided a good incentive to make good grades."

Tim believes college is as fun and interesting as you make it and...
"Getting a job on campus in the wheat breeding program has really broadened my outlook about crop science and my career aspirations."

Adam McClymont
Adam McClymont
Environmental Soil and Water Sciences

Adam chose the U of A because of a scholarship and decided to study environmental, soil and water sciences because of high school interests in the environmental sciences.

"I enjoy the small size of the Crop, Soil and Environment Sciences department and the atmosphere it creates."

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:
"Plan for an additional major."

Adam plans to attend graduate school at the U of A to continue his Honors Program research on antibiotic resistance in fecal bacteria Indicators downstream of wastewater treatment plants.

"The U of A has a great atmosphere, and I felt at home even on my first visit. I knew the U of A was my best option for an excellent education, not to mention, I fell in love with the Hogs.

"I am obsessed with the show Good Eats on the Food Network, and I always said to myself, that's what I really want to do. Little did I know, there is actually a Food Science major. I got a brochure in the mail one day and made up my mind immediately.

"I love that the departments are so small and tightly knit in Bumpers College. If I have a question or concern, I can go straight to the head and be confident he will take care of it."

Scott McVey
Scott McVey
Horticulture, Landscape and Turf Sciences

"I chose Turf Management because I have always been around a golf course and have been working at one for years. I enjoyed the work, so I decided to make it my career.

"I like being a Bumpers student because of the hands-on nature of most of the classes. One gets not only taught in a classroom, but also the experience of actually putting theory into practice and seeing results.

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:
"My advice to new students would be to make and keep as many contacts as possible and work hard during your internships. This will help you out early in your career and will lead to better jobs."

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:

"I chose apparel studies because it is my passion. I have a mind for fashion and I enjoy every aspect of it, from design to product development to merchandising, and the U of A has prepared me for a career within the fashion industry.

"The reason I was drawn to the U of A and chose to stay was because it has such a welcoming environment and offers one of the top apparel studies programs in the United States.

"My most exciting experience at the U of A is yet to come. I am to take part in an internship and the summer of 2006, I will be working for a clothing company at their main office in New York. This is definitely going to be an experience of a lifetime."

Ross Barbe

"Bumpers College has a great atmosphere for learning and is the perfect size – not to big, not too small.

"The scholarships I received helped to motivate me to maintain a high GPA. Without them, I wouldn't be here."

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:

"I have had many great experiences at the of A, but the best of times were enjoying the free activities such as comedies, plays, movies and Friday Night Live with my friends."

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:
"My advice to incoming students is to take advantage of the workshops, career development center and clubs that are provided to help you. Also, four years go by quickly, so have fun!"

Eva Sutton
Eva Sutton
Human Development, Family Sciences
and Rural Sociology

"The thing I like best about my major is that the professors are so interested and helpful. They are always willing to take the time to visit with me, and go out of their way to ensure that I have everything I need in order to succeed.

"I think the most important thing for students is to take the opportunities that your teachers offer you. Go to class and get to know your professors. They are not only a valuable source of information; they are also great mentors that will help you succeed in every area of your life.

"I consider the biggest accomplishment of my under graduate career was presenting my research at the National Conference on Family Relations in Phoenix, Arizona. I wrote a grant proposal in 2004 to study the effects of teaching a family relations course of students attitudes toward marriage and the family.

Mary Beth Stafford
Mary Beth Stafford
Interior Design

"From moving furniture in my room constantly when I was young to helping myself to the art supplies in elementary school, I knew there was a creative side of me waiting to come out. Interior design is a profession I think will allow me to put my talents to good use and help others in their own unique environments.

"Without scholarships, I probably would not have been able to afford attending the U of A in the first place. I have been given the opportunity to better myself and learn things that will open many doors for my future."

ADVICE TO FRESHMEN:
"Do not hold back. Let the teachers know you are in their presence and do not hide in the back of the classroom."
